Going to the gym on Tuesday for the 1st time in 20 years.
I've banged weight on from eating more and drinking in the week.Im 41 and usually confident and independent but my god I'm feeling so nervous.
Aibu to myself?

I did a pilates class for the first ever yesterday and I was nervous about going but it was fine. Ache today though.
I've been trying to lose weight this year too and have lost 2 stones so far but need to do more so I've started swimming and now pilates.
In all honesty, there is nothing to worry about as no one cares what you're doing as they are busy concentrating on what they are doing.
Good luck and don't over think things, just crack on.

PurpleDaisies · 06/08/2021 16:29

It’s going to be much better than you think.

Is there any way you can go before then? Get it out of the way? Or maybe do an online class, or go for a run or swim or something?

Good luck Flowers

Rather than signing up 30 pound per month I've paid for 1 session to see if I like it.That doesn't include an induction so I'll have to work it out myself.
If I become a member I can do classes too.

There are usually staff about to help if you need it though so I'm sure you'll be fine.
What is worrying you the most about going?

youdoyoutoday · 06/08/2021 16:44

I find I often build things up in my head and when I do do it, it's nowhere near as bad or as complicated as my imagination makes out!

Hyperion100 · 06/08/2021 16:53

Respect for going back!

Nobody gives a shit what anyone else is doing in there so just go and do your thing. Try and go in with a rough plan as its quite easy to drift from one bit of kit to another and not really do anything. ("Today im going to row for 10 minutes then cycle for 10 minutes") Try to not over do it.

If you don't know how to use a piece of equipment, ask the resident PT's for advice, that's what they are there for.

You'll hate it for a while, but consistency is key. At some magical point, you start to enjoy it.

youdoyoutoday · 06/08/2021 16:58

@Hyperion100 when does that magical moment happen?? I would love to enjoy exercise but still see it as such a task! Like right now, it's raining and I'm meant to be going swimming in an outdoor pool at 6.30..... I want to cancel!! But then I also want to escape my children today as they have driven me mental!! Is that the moment? Grin

Im worried that I'll look like an obvious novice.I remember when i first went at 21 and was so fucking scared lol.
Out of interest if I mainly do cardio for an hour 3 times a week should I see results after a few months?

Oh and I fucking loved it in my 20s got the buzz for sure.

youdoyoutoday · 06/08/2021 17:28

You will see results, mind your daily calorie intake too, drink lots of water, cut out fizzy drinks, it's all possible. Just takes dedication, it's a real shame that its so easy to pile on the pounds and so bloody hard to shift them!!!

MintyGreenDream · 06/08/2021 17:30

Is sparkling water or diet lemonade ok?

OP posts:
youdoyoutoday · 06/08/2021 17:32

Not sure about sparkling water if I'm honest but I have heard that diet drinks are full of crap too (sweetners etc) so best to avoid those too!!

The best way to shift weight at your age (I'm 42 myself) is through strength-training, which has the added benefit of helping to speed up your metabolism.

Cardio is good for your heart, but it's not really going to do anything else, and spending £30 a month to run on a treadmill is a bit pointless when you can do it outside for free.

If you haven't been in a gym for a long time, I really would advise booking an induction session with one of the trainers: they'll show you how to use the equipment safely and help you define a programme that meets your goals.

Most in-house trainers are very used to dealing with novices and are lovely: it's in their best interest to get you motivated and keep you coming, they don't want to scare you off!
