My elderly mother (78) recently widowed, was asked by a friend if they could store a sofa in her now newly empty garage.
She agreed and friend turned up to store said sofa with her daughter and daughter's boyfriend. Seeing a mostly empty garage the daughter's boyfriend took it upon himself to tell his father (I have no idea who these people are) of the location, and he has now dumped a variety of crap (mattress, furniture, motorbike) in there without permission.
Am I within my rights to remove all this stuff and dump it? Mum has asked this "friend" to get her acquaintance to remove it all by the weekend.
AIBU to think this is out of order and what do I do if they don't remove it?

Yep, tell them they have until X date to remove and if not you'll hire a van to remove it, dump it and give them the bill. Or sell it Grin

ThomasHardyPerennial · 06/08/2021 15:55

Hard to know how to sort it out, without being out of pocket yourself! I would probably hire a van and dump it all at the friends house. They are a bunch of dickheads! Hope it isn't upsetting your mum too much.

Al1963 · 06/08/2021 16:00

It has upset my Mum a lot and I a bit concerned that these people know where she lives now.

Your mother is lucky you are keeping an eye on things.
Of course it's out of order.

I agree with your mum, would demand that they remove by the weekend, would save me a trip to the tip if they do.

(I'd also put cameras around the house to ensure they don't leave all sort of shit behind)

StCharlotte · 06/08/2021 16:07

Ring the friend and tell her to sort it right now.

This would worry me too.
DogsSausages · 06/08/2021 16:10

Her friend needs to tell them to remove it asap, get the sofa taken out too, make sure the garage is kept locked at all, times and install CCTV or a doorbell that covers the front and garage.

Seeline · 06/08/2021 16:15

Alternatively, what's the going rate to rent a garage in the area?

itsgettingwierd · 06/08/2021 16:29

Get a lock for the garage as a first port of call.

Then give them a deadline in writing to remove their stuff they have dumped on mums property without permission or you will remove by x date.

Al1963 · 06/08/2021 16:57

I'll definitely be getting a lock for the garage. Just hoping their stuff is removed without having to resort to ultimatums.

OP posts:
AwaAnBileYerHeid · 06/08/2021 17:22

I'd be advertising the stuff on gumtree, free to anyone in need. Cheeky beggars.

acolderwar · 06/08/2021 17:31

You're being a lot calmer than I would be in this situation. I would submerge the lot in water, including the couch.

LuxOlente · 06/08/2021 17:34

Absolutely shocking how some people are. Agree there's definitely concern that they've shown form for taking advantage of an elderly lady who can't defend herself, especially against blokes she doesn't know suddenly driving up and using the garage.

This "friend" should be reigning her daughter in, or she's a concern too. She's no less to blame.

Biblionerd · 06/08/2021 17:35

Oh, so very out of order, they're not to know if you DM has plans for the rest of the space, they're being proper CFs and need to remove everything ASAP! Then garage needs locking!

Sn0tnose · 06/08/2021 17:38

If you get no response to the request to remove it, I’d dump it all on your mum’s friend’s front garden and she can sort it out with the daughter’s boyfriend and his dad. And I wouldn’t care if I had to pay a man with a van to shift it. I certainly wouldn’t be solving their problem by taking it to the tip for them.

pommepommefrites · 06/08/2021 17:44

I'd be dumping dog shit through their letterbox until it was sorted

mickeysminnie · 06/08/2021 17:56

I would ring your mums friend yourself. Tell her to get everything including the sofa out of the garage immediately. Tell her you will be hosting a garage sale tomorrow and selling everything for £1 if it's still in there.
Cheeky fuckers. With friends like that who needs enemies!

SeigneurLapindeGrantham · 06/08/2021 18:07

Not much of a friend is she? Taking advantage of an elderly woman makes me so mad but I've seen this kind of thing before. Friend should be ashamed.

Tiddleztheelephant · 06/08/2021 18:18

Wouldn't this be classed as fly tipping which is illegal?
If so then she can report them to the council I think.

Snaketime · 06/08/2021 18:30

That is shocking op. I would be tempted to leave the stuff on the drive for people to help themselves to it.

Anonymous48 · 06/08/2021 18:32

How are they getting into the garage? I don't understand.

Crayfishforyou · 06/08/2021 19:20

They have 7 days to remove it or it all goes on free cycle?

Cherrysoup · 06/08/2021 19:42

Get on their case and stay on it. They are disgraceful taking advantage of your mum.

Leeds2 · 06/08/2021 19:58

I would get the friend's number and deal with future communications yourself.
Tell her the boyfriend has 7 (or however many) days to move his stuff and, if he doesn't, it will be taken to a charity shop/the dump. British Heart Foundation will collect the furniture.

EKGEMS · 06/08/2021 20:08

@pommepommefrites Now, now let's get more old school and put the dog poo in a paper bag on their door step set afire
