So, I'm selling a pair of golden curtains. Never used so left in storage so decided to put it up for sale. Then, a buyer was interested. Asked about specifications and other information. I did put it up for a reasonable price at £40 yet she asked for my best price.
Agreed at my fixed price and was more than happy to collect the next day.

This morning, she arrived on time and I showed her the curtains. She examined then said it wasn't worth the money Hmm, then left.

Bloody hell! How much do people actually try to haggle down?

The exact same curtains retail from £50-£100 Shock!

I understand that people are trying to get a bargain, but are people really pushing it this far? Anybody else had this or AIBU??

From £50?
So they aren't worth £40?

ImRhondaAndthesearentreal · 06/08/2021 13:53

Obviously you both have differing ideas how much secondhand curtains are worth.

She didn't do anything wrong.

Whinge · 06/08/2021 13:54

She examined then said it wasn't worth the money

It doesn't sound like she tried to haggle. I wonder if she didn't like them when she saw them in person, but used the price as an excuse.

LizzieMacQueen · 06/08/2021 13:54

Yeah, even BNWT stuff I'd expect a discount of 33 to 50% off.

AnnaSW1 · 06/08/2021 13:55

She probably expected then to be better quality than they were. Who would pay £40 for second hand curtains that were originally only £50?

Zarene · 06/08/2021 13:55

She's absolutely entitled to decide she doesn't want them based on looking at them.

However detailed you are in answering questions, it's not the same as properly seeing something.

If her discount from new is potentially just £10 she's even more entitled to be picky.

YABVU.

Stompythedinosaur · 06/08/2021 13:57

It is frustrating but I think she's entitled to change her mind when she sees them.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 06/08/2021 13:59

I would pay max 30. Max. Because if tehy are 50 and you want 40, I would rather add a tennwr for warranty in a shop🤷

GLXi · 06/08/2021 14:06

@HurryUpAndWait23

When new, they range around £50-£100.

There was one worth £30, but I priced mine as I calculated the average price for all of the curtains.

When new, they range around £50-£100.

But yours aren't new. They may not have been opened, but they've been in storage and don't come with any of the warrenties / guarantees that a brand new shop bought product would.

GLXi · 06/08/2021 14:09

@SchrodingersImmigrant

TBF, I would accept your statement. But they are in immaculate condition. That's a matter of opinion though Wink.

FreeBritnee · 06/08/2021 14:10

I don’t think she did anything wrong either! She viewed the goods and changed her mind. Totally acceptable.

ImRhondaAndthesearentreal · 06/08/2021 14:11

Regardless of the condition you think they're in, they're still secondhand.

SmashingBlouson · 06/08/2021 14:11

There was one worth £30, but I priced mine as I calculated the average price for all of the curtains.

That's why then. You can get them cheaper elsewhere and you can return if buying from a retailer if they turn out to be in poor condition. You don't have that with Gumtree if the seller decides to ignore you.

I think you are taking it too personally.

GLXi · 06/08/2021 14:13

@Whinge

Of course they aren't new, don't expect any warranties Smile. But tbh, other people have priced curtains similar to mine. Maybe there are people out there who want a cheaper alternative.

OP posts:
viques · 06/08/2021 14:13

I think she was reasonable. If I wanted to buy new curtains I probably wouldn’t buy the first ones I saw if I was buying in a shop, she clearly didn’t like yours for whatever reason so didn’t feel obliged to buy them and who knows why, colour, fabric, weight, finish . If she had liked them enough she would have paid the extra £10.

Whinge · 06/08/2021 14:16

So if you're aware they're not new, why are you comparing prices to new curtains? Confused

I think your reaction to her deciding not to buy the curtains is quite odd. £40 is a lot of money to spend on something she didn't like, and she's allowed to change her mind.

Maddison12 · 06/08/2021 14:18

I don't necessarily think you're being unreasonable, I've found gumtree to be a massive pain in the arse. People will agree a time to collect an item, I'll wait in for them, they don't bother to turn up, not even a "sorry can't make it" message. Then people want things for next to nothing, thoroughly frustrating.

BUT I think it depends on the curtains really. I bought some 90 x 90 ones from Next a few months ago that were £120, I would have been really pleased if I'd have found decent second hand ones listed for £50.

smalalalalalala · 06/08/2021 14:21

I feel you are the one trying to get a bargain

There is cheaper available with the possibility to return + brand new.

It ranges between £50-£100 this is 100% difference so I imagine quality would be important. We don't know how much you paid for yours.

She has been polite, and she changed her mind, that's fair.

GLXi · 06/08/2021 14:26

@Whinge

I understand what you're saying Smile. It's a 'second hand' product but never used. Of course people have the right to change minds as a buyer. It's not like I'm gonna threaten them lol.

I'm not exactly pricing it to new curtains, but it's never been used, so it can be compared to a new one. But that's a matter of opinion Smile.

OP posts:
GLXi · 06/08/2021 14:29

@smalalalalalala

I paid £75 for them when new.

OP posts:
ClaudiaWankleman · 06/08/2021 14:30

I don't see what she did wrong.

GLXi · 06/08/2021 14:51

@Maddison12

The curtains are 90x90. But as you said, people are looking for a bargain!

JingleCatJingle · 06/08/2021 14:53

Inteigued at the idea of a curtain warranty, what would that even entail?
