Built different

My adult daughter changed the names on our group family chat to be all the same theme as a joke, think types of bread based on where they were living.
My nickname was changed to, built different, which she passed of as on a higher level.
i was a little unsure, but didnt want to make a fuss, i believe now that it is a sarcastic tiktok reponse to stupid boasting, which if true , makes me feel sad and a little isolated. AIBU to think that, please put me straight.

No I think it’s a compliment. Like if someone is the best in the football class, my son would say ‘he’s just built different’ to mean he’s just naturally great/better.

Does your adult daughter use tiktok? If so, then yes it could be that. If she doesn’t then it isn’t.

”The phrase "built different" is meant to describe a person or thing that is on another level. These videos are intended to be funny while tackling serious topics like, racial stereotypes, gender norms, misogyny, and historical/current events.”

It’s a compliment.

yes , Butterflyaway, this is why i was sceptical, she and her sister both use Tiktok everyday, so i figure they understand the nuance.

Adults use TikTok?!

cinammonbuns · 06/08/2021 08:32

@Fiftysix even on tiktok it’s used as a compliment. For example if somebody was in a bad situation but they turned out fine then you would say they are just ‘built different’. It’s a positive description. I don’t know where you got the idea that it’s negative.

Fiftysix · 06/08/2021 08:42

When i say adult, i mean they've just left uni and i was the only one described differently, so i just looked it up and it was a double edged thing.

Maybe im reading too much into it, she does tend to query what i say, whereas is much more on board with everything her father says. i might be seeing things that arent there.

I'm not on TikTok (thank fuck), so I can't comment on the relevance there, but my family often describe me as 'built differently' to them.

It's a backwards compliment in their context, so going by what PPs are saying, I wouldn't take it as an insult. I'd be asking for some context though!

Thank you all , for responding so kindly in your comments, sometimes i need a little objectivity.

@ImRhondaAndthesearentreal

Adults use TikTok?!
Yup, many many adults, which is why kink tok is a thing. I was looking at an article that said tiktok was one of the only social media that attracts a good chunk of people from all age ranges, from children to elderly.
