To hate how the word Lush is bandied around these days?

It makes me shudder.
To me it means verdant, luxuriant greenery or someone who likes the drink a little too much ... it just gives me the rage when it's used to describe pretty average stuff.

What counts as ‘these days’? It’s been in common parlance in the West Country for at least 40 years, IME.

I haven’t noticed its usage increasing. The opposite, if anything. All these slang terms go in and out of fashion. Don’t use it if you don’t like it.

margotsdevil · 06/08/2021 00:28

I have far less issue with lush than I do with "sick" as a positive term...

FayeFayeFayeFayeFaye · 06/08/2021 00:28

These days? Where I grew up right on the Welsh border, it was very commonly used.

RoseRedRoseBlue · 06/08/2021 00:29

Urgh the incorrect use of language drives me mad! ‘Devastated’ is thrown about far too much and 99% of the time the user is NOT anywhere near devastation.

Toucan123 · 06/08/2021 00:31

I'm 46 and I remember this word being used all the time when I was a child/teen living in the west country.

Maggiesfarm · 06/08/2021 00:34

I haven't heard it much but I know people from the Bristol area say, "Gert lush".

Comtesse · 06/08/2021 00:35

Agreed with previous posters - OP you were clearly not living in the West Country in the 1980s if you think this is new usage. But at least no one is saying “gurt lush” which always seemed a bit much….

Teaseall · 06/08/2021 00:35

@MrsTulipTattsyrup I think it's really started to bug me in the last 5 or so years, probably when certain West Country chef took over my local town Grin.

I hate it too and am glad that it's not really a thing in Scotland. It also reminds me of the shop that you can smell when you're within 5 miles of it. That infuriates me too Wink

Teaseall · 06/08/2021 00:41

That's the issue I think, I'm not in the West Country or Welsh borders, I'm Home Counties west of London. It doesn't bother me in context of either of those areas but for some reason it does when used locally now .... might be because I'm slipping into my dotage now Grin

Lush was a common phrase about 20 years ago, apart from where it actually derived from and is still common parlance. The kids round here would laugh at you for using it.

MrsMoastyToasty · 06/08/2021 00:46

"Gurt lush" and "gurt mint" have been in common usage for all my life.
(I'm a Bristolian and on the far side of 50 ).

Teaseall · 06/08/2021 00:47

@Indiana2021 yup, that shop gives me an instant headache .... I have to hold my breath to walk past.

I'm South East and it only seems to be used for pictures of Sunday take away roasts in polystyrene containers. As in "that was lush". "That looks lush" etc etc.

I also hate that use.

OldGreyBoots · 06/08/2021 02:48

I agree, it really irrationally annoys me Blush

WillowGrand · 06/08/2021 02:49

Don’t move to wales!

carriehagshaw · 06/08/2021 02:54

For some reason I say it... I think perhaps a colleague uses it. But often when I say it it's met with a repetition in a welsh accent back at me

QueenBee52 · 06/08/2021 04:11

Gavin & Stacey

Stacey is a fan of the Lush ☺️

echt · 06/08/2021 04:28

The Fat Slags of Viz magazine used the word lush back in the 90s - NE England.

“Shudder” means to ‘tremble convulsively, typically as a result of fear or revulsion’

I’m sure you don’t do that when you hear someone misuse (to your mind) the word “lush”.

It gives me the rage when people misuse language to over exaggerate …

gindreams · 06/08/2021 05:03

I hate it

It makes me irrationally angry

PhilCornwall1 · 06/08/2021 05:07

Tom fucking Kerridge, everything he likes is "Lush". Does my head in!!!! 😡

Rant over.

ChittyChittyBangBangChicken · 06/08/2021 05:10

Not my favourite thing to see it hear, either, but then I also dislike "gives me the rage". I guess we all have our idiosyncrasies. 😆

ChittyChittyBangBangChicken · 06/08/2021 05:11

"see or hear" Blush
