Which job sounds better? Can't decide

Hello.. I've been job hunting recently (I enjoy my job but fed up with the company) and have been for a few interviews. I've had two job offers which are both very different. Which one sounds better to you? I can't decide...

Job 1 - working 55 hours over 5 days a week (weekends off). 1.5 hour commute on top. I would also occasionally be required to stay on later in the evening. This job is similar to what I do now. Salary is in the range of 35k. I've done my research and they seem like a good company to work for but the job is physically demanding and I'm worried I might burnout eventually due to the long hours.

Job 2 - working from home 37.5 hours over 5 days a week (weekends off). This job is in a completely different line of work, but I would receive full training. Salary is a lot less, around 20k but there is room for progression. I'm worried I might get bored of being stuck at home all the time and miss the social aspect of going to work every day, but I might actually enjoy doing something different.

Job 1 is much better in terms of pay but the work is a lot harder, much longer hours. I wouldn't struggle on job 2's pay but it's always nice to have a bit extra isn't it. Really stuck. Advice?

Oh, well if it's actually only FIFTY HOURS then that's completely different... Confused

I'd go for job 2, and keep looking.

50 hours.... Fuck me

SquashMinusIsShit · 05/08/2021 22:45

I’d love to know what job 1 is!

Me too! Surely it can't be legit

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 05/08/2021 22:48

Job 2 does interest me, just wish the salary was a bit higher!

The net effect won't be as big as the difference between the 2 salaries though. You need to factor in the difference in your outgoings. What will the commute cost you? If you're working long hours and commuting; you will spend more on food / takeaways etc. You'll need fewer smart clothes and less wear and tear on shoes/bags etc if you're working at home. So you might earn more doing silly hours but you will spend more. But more importantly I'd worry about the impact on your well-being of the first job.

OP, there's a lot to be said for progression. I did a sideways move in my organisation at the start of the year and everyone was like why are you moving for the same pay? But I did it for progression which I knew would happen and am now just a few months later, head of the team.

crabbingbucket · 05/08/2021 22:51

I think as others say it's all about your age and family commitments.

Are you looking at climbing a ladder or work/life balance?

If you're 20s/ early 30s no kids I'd say go for the money and more hours

HidingFromDD · 05/08/2021 22:52

Is job 1 a nanny job?

badatcrochet1996 · 05/08/2021 22:53

I wouldn't take job 1 in a million years. You'd have no life.

Job 2 would be preferable for me. As long as you wouldn't struggle on the money. Is there definitely progression?

I had similar worries about WFH but I love it! I don't want to go back to the office, still interact with colleagues online. Love having my own space.

Thisnamewasnttaken123 · 05/08/2021 22:53

Job 2 without a doubt.

crabbingbucket · 05/08/2021 22:53

Also if you're younger/ pre family then working home alone could be isolating and hinder meeting potential partners/ friends and gaining promotions etc.

It all depends what's important to you right now. When I was 25 I'd have hated job 2. But now in my 40s I'd hate job 1!

lastqueenofscotland · 05/08/2021 22:59

55 hrs a week sounds like the pits.

CaffeineAndNicotine · 05/08/2021 23:02

Hmm. Well I do 49 hours for the salary of job 2, well a bit over, but not much. Plus the commute is only an hour. And regularly arrive an hour or two early or stay late. And although we are entitled to a break none of the management team really take them. I do pop outside for a ciggy once or twice but there are times when i am the only key holder there so i cant take one, BUT I really really enjoy my job though and dh is wfh so the support network is there. Plus my kids are teens.
So I say go for the job you will enjoy the most.

ilikecheesecake · 05/08/2021 23:11

Don't do it. Hubby works 47 hour days with a 4 hour round trip on top, he's done it for many years different locations and it's killing him. finally giving his notice in next week and I can't wait.

Sorka · 05/08/2021 23:53

I’ve done a long commute and worked long hours, albeit only contracted for a 40 hour week (including an unpaid lunch break) and I say take job 2. Even doing 9-5 with a three hour a day commute on top on a good day ground me down, that’s before overtime and train delays.

Can you negotiate a better salary for job 2? You say there’s an opportunity for progression - how so? Will your salary go up? Will you get a qualification? Promotion?

Deereamer · 06/08/2021 00:17

I’d 100% go for job 2. You can’t put a price on health, happiness and free time.

Thankgoodness1 · 06/08/2021 01:25

11 hours a day plus 1.5 hours commute?! No way! That’s a ridiculous amount of hours.

ConsuelaHammock · 06/08/2021 01:38

Job 2

ConsuelaHammock · 06/08/2021 01:38

You can have time or money. Time is more important.

Sleepyhungryfattyanddoc · 06/08/2021 01:39

Job 1 but ask for more money

If they say no then job 2 - but ask for more money

Take job 2
Save the extra cash and spend any free time you do have looking for another job

Sleepyhungryfattyanddoc · 06/08/2021 01:40

…I think I got the jobs the wrong way round Blush

Monty27 · 06/08/2021 01:44

50 hours plus 1.5 commute? For 35k?
What are your home life commitments OP.
If you have any you must be superwoman or very rich already

RainbowMum11 · 06/08/2021 04:05

Job 1 is almost double the hours (including commute and probable later finishes), work out the travelling costs as well, job 2 (with progression prospects) seems absolutely the right move in that respect - which job appeals to you more?

Mandalay246 · 06/08/2021 05:21

I would NEVER work 55 hours a week - that's insane!

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 06/08/2021 05:22

Definitely not the longer hours one... Shocking pay too....

Go for progressions and NEGOTIATE a better starting salary... Women often don't to their detriment!

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 06/08/2021 05:50

I mean, 50h is fine but not for 35k! You should be on twice that if you're expected to work that much.
