What are your experiences with them? Pros and Cons? 😊

Smart meters are a waste of time, and even a liability for bill payers, they often don't work, installation can be by Neanderthals who will break other things in your house, and then leave the meter not working.

The mere fact that they are being pushed by Energy Suppliers tells us who finds them an advantage. You may find it impossible to change supplier- no wonder they want you to have one!

I'd rather give the supplier a correct reading on an automated phone line, or online- it takes about 2 minutes, than have one of these defective gadgets give false readings which you will spend days on the phone to call centres trying, in vain, to sort out.

So NO.

I had a brand new non smart electricity meter installed in January due to my old one malfunctioning. I’m with Bulb. I requested one and it wasn’t a problem. I would never use British gas.

HappydaysArehere · 07/08/2021 18:38

We had ours put in some years ago and it just registered high, medium and low. So after awhile and deciding I knew which things were high, low consumption. I removed it as I really needed the electric point for other things. However, I like not having to record use for the gas and electric and also not being bothered by someone coming to read the meter. Very, very occasionally someone does come to check the meter out. Haven’t seen anyone for ages now. I am now wondering where it is!!!

They are crap. I got one after much badgering but it never worked from day 1 and there’s a lot of information (and misinformation!) about the health implications as an aside. Mine is in the junk drawer in the kitchen and has been for nearly 2 years. I just use the app to top up and go into the garage and read the meter for a balance of my phone is off etc. Best of both worlds!

I like being able to see my daily spend. The only pain is when you switch suppliers.

Unfortunately, i dont have any pros just cons.

I had a smart meter in my old house (2 bedroom back 2 back house, 2 floors). I had to top up £10 every two days this was with boost.

Ive since moved house with no smart meter. 3 bedrooms and 3 floors (gas with octopus is £25 a month and electric with boost is £80 a month).

Im literally saving hundreds of pounds and the only difference is no smart meter. Im with the same supplier for electricity but paying much less and in a much bigger house.

I personally think smart meters are a con i will be holding out until the very end until im forced to get one as i just dont think its worth it.

Rummikub · 08/08/2021 00:19

Imo they are a con. It’s not fur customer benefit ultimately but just for suppliers.

We've had smart meters for years now
No problems with the installation, meters or tariffs.
We gone from being normal consumers to recently being pretty much off grid for electricity (large pv grid & battery - which in summer sells excess to the grid) without any problems.

It is a con. I had one in our last house because I assumed that it would monitor my usage and changed my direct debit accordingly so I wouldn't end up with a big bill when we moved out. Not so!

I then found out that the bill is calculated every six months. The energy company thought I would catch up eventually. Catch up £300. I was furious.

spongedod · 08/08/2021 12:09

I'm only interested in one because I'm prepayment and I can top up from home but I wonder if it's not worth it - we have gas and electric prepayment.
