In vaccinated people?

If you've got what you think is a cold, it may be worth getting a PCR test to avoid passing it on.

AIBU to think that this change to symptom info hasn't been reported widely enough (and wonder why?).

Yanbu. Also sickness and diarrhoea in children/teens. I work in a secondary school and the symptoms mainly seem to be headache and upset stomach.

Kittii · 05/08/2021 13:46

YANBU. I'm shocked how few people seem to be aware of this.

The NHS three main symptoms list is completely outdated and inaccurate now. I'm in two minds whether it is incompetence that stops them updating the symptoms for testing or a secret policy to increase herd immunity...

Hemingwaycat · 05/08/2021 13:54

It’s hayfever season. Anyone who has hayfever almost definitely has these symptoms most days throughout summer. Not to mention the fact the symptoms are the main symptoms of the common cold. If everyone who has a cold or hayfever isolated pending test results, the country would grind to a halt.

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 05/08/2021 13:59

Then surely testing needs to be ramped up, @Hemingwaycat ?

These are the (only ) three symptoms that 'qualify' you for a PCR test. They haven't been updated, despite evidence pointing to new information.

I had to lie and tick one of them to get a test, which came back positive.

If you have symptoms, you need testing, in my opinion.

If it's a cold or hayfever you'll be good to go.

I've just had covid and am double jabbed and my main symptom was non stop sneezing. So yes I was aware of this.

Gigglebiscuit · 05/08/2021 14:16

We currently have covid here. My DH mostly had a cough and headache up to now - only one jab so far. My teen DC has had (so far) temperature, headache, sneezing, mucus and cough - no jabs. I am double jabbed and have a headache, sore throat but barely any coughing, and very sniffly nose. We're only a few days in though, so we'll see what time brings.

smileandsmilesomemorey · 05/08/2021 14:17

I've taken my Dc for a PCR, but there aren't many people left to pass it to left are there? Kids are obviously interacting with other kids, but if as a vaccinated adult I had symptoms that were cold like I wouldn't even think of a PCR test without having a cough. If it's just a cold then what's the bother?

HPLikecraft · 05/08/2021 14:39

Yes, you have to Google carefully to find a list of the "new" symptoms; the new variants have slightly different symptoms, as well as the different presentation that vaccinated people have Vs unvaccinated.
Still the same old "new, persistent cough" stuff on any NHS literature or webpage that's been ther for over a year.

I suppose i feel a sense of responsibility to not pass on a potentially damaging illness if I can help it?

My daughter has been complaining about tummy ache and I send her to a holiday club as she didn't have fever or a cough or any other symptom...Husband now tested positive for covid..I think daughter has it too as she has developed a fever.

YANBU! If I have known sore stomach could be a symptom I would have kept her at home!

IamEarthymama · 05/08/2021 15:01

Oh I do so agree!
I have been ill for a week, I thought it was sinusitis.
I tried all my usual treatments but my headache would not ease at all.
I rang my GP on Tuesday as I thought I needed ABs.
When I listed my symptoms; headache, fluctuating temperature, (well, sweating but actual temp normal), fatigue, occasionally upset stomach he advised me to get a PCR. I am waiting for results.

However, none of these are listed on any government website.
It's ridiculous.and so confusing.

I have Long Covid so I am dreading a positive rest, I will fall apart if covid affects any more of my poor body!

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 05/08/2021 22:17

@IamEarthymama - you poor thing - I so hope you don't have it again, that would be more than unfair x

Sneezing
Sore throat
Aching neck
Fatigue

These were my recent covid symptoms (had my jabs in Feb & May).

Tinpotspectator · 05/08/2021 22:56

When I had covid early in the pandemic, it started with a sudden dose of the runs. I think that symptom has been around all along, but was much less common than it is now.

FlamingGalar · 05/08/2021 23:03

YANBU
Last day of isolation with covid and our main symptoms have been a terrible headache, blocked nose, sneezing and a sore throat. I had a really low temperature too. Even the test and trace person I spoke to on the first day said it’s madness that the official list of symptoms hasn’t been updated with this new variant. My husband and I are both double jabbed. Our kids aren’t and they had the same symptoms as we did.

Ofalltheginjoints · 05/08/2021 23:05

That's really interesting OP, I had a headache (thought blamed DDog for accidentally headbutting me the day before) and a runny nose.

Did the lateral flow test and was positive which was then confirmed by a PCR test, that was last Friday and my breathing has been effected to the point of paramedics being sent by GP, certainly hasn't been "just a cold" and I had my 2nd vaccine back in April.

DwangelaForever · 05/08/2021 23:09

Yes because it was my first symptom. I wouldn't have went for a test if not for a close contact testing positive on a lft (I probably would have when my illness got worse but at the time I just thought I had a cold)

OkOkWhatsNext · 05/08/2021 23:11

Crazy that you have to lie about your symptoms to get a PCR test if you have cold symptoms!

Really crazy, @OkOkWhatsNext

I'd really like to know the real reason these new, very common symptoms haven't been added to the test list.

Looubylou · 06/08/2021 11:27

It's because society would come to a standstill - this question needs to be asked at one of the briefings. The figures are not remotely accurate. I come into contact with lots of people who have not tested their children, despite relevant symptoms, because they presented at GP, who didn't suggest it.

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 06/08/2021 14:28

You're right, @Looubylou - society would find itself on hold again.

However PCR testing has become quick and efficient, so perhaps not?

No wonder people don't have confidence in the government when they are taking a 'head in the sand' approach.

I knew this but only because dds schoolsent a letter in the last week of school stating that these were also symptoms. Most of the mum's at pickup were quite surprised because it was hayfever season, the pollen count had been really high and quite a number of the children had runny noses and scratchy throats.
