to think there is not a shortage of front doors

I don't think my door fitter reads Mumsnet, so I'm not going to change my name.

Bought a new front door, it's requires a special shaped frame. 6 to 8 weeks.
6 weeks later they arrive to measure up, it'll be 6 to 8 weeks.
8 weeks I phone them , the frame makers have gone bust, not to worry they have a new firm it'll be 6 to 8 weeks.
6 weeks later they turn up to re measure, it'll be 6 to 8 weeks.
Are you spotting a trend here?
Phone up, where's my door, stuck in the Suez canal apparently.
they ring me up , they'll be here next week , 6 weeks ago.
Today they've replied to my snotty phone call, no doors, or fitters, in the world apparently.

So is there really a shortage of front doors, or am I on the receiving end of the longest wind up ever?

Shortage of lots of building materials in Ireland at present.

burningfire · 05/08/2021 13:05

Since you have to wait I'd just cancel and go with a different company. I would have done that 16 weeks ago.

redfairy · 05/08/2021 13:05

Not so sure, my sister waited months for her conservatory roof and more recently a friend cancelled a double glazing order as she had waited 6 months for her windows. Both suppliers said they couldn't get the materials.

AphroditeGoddessOfLove · 05/08/2021 13:06

My friend was told her door was on the Suez Canal as well. According to head office it's still there, except they turned up to fit it a few weeks ago 🙄

HarveySpectorWins · 05/08/2021 13:06

I don't know about doors specifically but there is a shortage of building materials and supplies at the moment so I wouldn't necessarily think they are lying. A mixture of brexit and COVID is causing massive construction industry issues. (DP is moaning every single day about things like this Grin)

comedycentral · 05/08/2021 13:08

Not sure what your doors made of but there's a shortage of timber... www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-57920510.amp

TrulyOutrageousJem · 05/08/2021 13:08

I waited four months for my internal doors to come back into stock. There is definitely a shortage.

FunnyInjury · 05/08/2021 13:09

There are shortages of everything not manufactured here atm 🤷‍♀️ timber, plastics, glass...all in short supply I've heard.

Shadedog · 05/08/2021 13:09

There is a shortage of EVERYTHING. I waited 8 weeks for a standard window from Europe, my neighbour is a self employed mechanic and he says loads of parts are an absolute nightmare to get hold of (the sort of thing he’d used to be able to order for next day delivery) building materials are in short supply, I have a friend whose been give a 6 month lead time on a sofa.

MotionActivatedDog · 05/08/2021 13:10

Yep. What they^ said.

woopdedoodle · 05/08/2021 13:12

I want to be reasonable, looks like they are not fibbing.

Yeh my friend has had 4x front door orders cancelled, just cannot fulfil them

Redglitter · 05/08/2021 13:13

Huge shortage of all building materials.
I got a new front door a few months ago. Took 3 months to arrive. It was ordered & fitted by a company owned by my cousin so I know I wasn't fobbed off. My friends parents ordered from him a couple of months ago and he doesn't have any idea when there's will arrive

I've got a friend who's a handyman and is having real trouble getting supplies - the stuff he can get has shot up in price

Porcupineintherough · 05/08/2021 13:15

It's a bit shit that we cant manufacture doors here in the uk though, no?

ImRhondaAndthesearentreal · 05/08/2021 13:17

In the building trade.

There's a shortage of most things at the moment.

IGoWalkingAfterMidnight · 05/08/2021 13:19

I've ordered a front and back door - been told they will be at least 10 weeks...

Lulola · 05/08/2021 13:29

I ordered mine based on the company saying I would have them in 4 weeks, it was 16 in the end!

TheBullfinch · 05/08/2021 13:29

I'm in the same boat. It's so frustrating. There's a huge shortage of concrete and screws too.

lastqueenofscotland · 05/08/2021 13:30

Is it wood?
There is a huge shortage of timber

HamSandwichKiller · 05/08/2021 13:32

There's a shortage of the glass in the composite doors apparently.

LokiOfAsgard · 05/08/2021 13:38

Certainly a PVC shortage. We had gutters and facias done and were originally booked in for October (from May!) because of it, but builder (family friend) managed to drop on just enough to sort it for us last month.
He's back to twiddling his thumbs now though as he can't get any more.

SixesAndEights · 05/08/2021 13:41

I've recently got the French window I ordered a couple of months ago. Frankly I'm surprised it's arrived so soon. I don't think it's because there's a shortage per se, more the supply chain is affected.

Dontevernamechange · 05/08/2021 13:42

We've just had new windows and doors, gutters etc fitted that we got the quote for 10 months ago and they originally said 12 weeks.

CallMeNutribullet · 05/08/2021 13:44

There's def a shortage of timber for decking and fencing so reasonable to assume it might be true.

tiredanddangerous · 05/08/2021 13:45

YY to a shortage of all building materials. I have a relative who's move into a new build has been delayed multiple times due to a shortage of bricks.
