To ask if anyone has a magic cure

For restless legs?

I’ve been suffering for almost a year. Been advised by the GP it’s due to either (heart) medications I’m on, stress or hormonal.

I can’t take it anymore.

I’m exhausted. I’ve been surviving on 3 hours of light sleep per night (according to my Fitbit) for weeks. When I eventually fall asleep it wakes me up.

I have 2 small children (4 and 2) and am single. I’m barely functional.

Anyone know anything that can help?
I’ll try any old wives tales you can throw at me.

Wine and lots of it. Fall asleep instantly

MissisBoote · 03/08/2021 23:37

Magnesium oil slathered over them before bed. It might sting a bit at first. You could also try magnesium supplements too.
I buy my oil from Holland and Barrett.

SprinkleOfInsanity · 03/08/2021 23:38

Magnesium tablets! Take one about an hour before bed - magic!

If you don't have any in the house tonight, maybe you have tonic? The quinine in that is meant to work too :)

Epsom salt baths work too.

Hope you find something that works, it really is miserable and exhausting.

Notimeforaname · 03/08/2021 23:39

Caffeine, alcohol, smoking and sugar can make it worse in some people. And as you say, medication too. Have you changed your diet to see?

Terriah · 03/08/2021 23:40

My dad swears by a bar of soap placed under the sheet at the bottom of the bed. Sounds mad but he's told loads of people and it's worked for them too.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 03/08/2021 23:45

Tonic Water.

Theghostofchristmasarse · 03/08/2021 23:47

I second magnesium, oil, Epsom salt baths, but also potassium, banana before bed? Really helps me. It's horrible I really feel for you.

BluebellsGreenbells · 03/08/2021 23:47

Anyone else picturing a drunk OP covered in oil eating bananas whilst attempting to place a bar of Dove under the sheets?

OP DH ‘yes doctor we are worried’

billy1966 · 03/08/2021 23:48

Magnesium, well known.

Throw the bar of soap under the sheet for good luck.

ChilliChaos · 03/08/2021 23:50

Thank you for the replies.

Stopped caffeine, alcohol, smoking and sugar after having a heart attack in my 30s!

Will try the magnesium tablets if there’s no contraindications with my meds. I have psoriasis so don’t want to risk the oil.

Bar of soap is under the sheet! 😂

I'd love to know!! Mine are slowly driving me fucking batshit crazy. CBD oil was recommended to me and definitely helps a bit. Definitely going to try the tonic water too. Possibly with copious amounts of gin added Wink

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 03/08/2021 23:51

Magnesium either in the form of tablets or brazil nuts.

I get RL if I'm anaemic so I find taking iron tablets helps me (probably best to have a blood test first to see if you are anaemic).

ChilliChaos · 03/08/2021 23:54

Haha no dove soap, just a bar of smelly coat tar I have to get on prescription!

I do have slightly low iron but not anaemic - Ferrartin I think?

Sarahzb · 03/08/2021 23:56

Yeah, can you get bloods done to see if you are deficient in something. But lack of magnesium makes you go potty. Chin up my love.

FantasticButtocks · 03/08/2021 23:58

Try this little remedial Pilates move.
When you get into bed, lie on your back and bend your knees with your feet a little apart flat on the mattress. Raise just your toes on both feet, splaying them as much as you can, lower them, repeat a few times. Then, the next time you raise your toes, raise the rest of your foot, but keeping your heels still on the mattress, repeat a few times. Try this every night before you sleep, hope it helps.

PickAChew · 03/08/2021 23:58

Weighted blanket. Good hydration. Booze!

magsbagsfags · 03/08/2021 23:59

RLS and iron/ferritin levels are linked

Willowthewispp · 04/08/2021 00:00

A glass of tonic water before bed... leg exercises an hour before bed works for me

YukoandHiro · 04/08/2021 00:01

Magnesium spray

YukoandHiro · 04/08/2021 00:01

And bananas apparently

FantasticButtocks · 04/08/2021 00:01

So to clarify for the second bit - you still start by lifting just the toes, and then follow with the rest of the foot so you are bending upwards from the ankle, your heels still on the bed.

AtomicSquirrel3 · 04/08/2021 00:01

I get restless legs when my ferritin level is low. May be speak to GP about a test to check your level. Once my level is raised, the symptoms subside.

Kevintheelf80 · 04/08/2021 00:12

Bobbles round your ankles

SeaShoreGalore · 04/08/2021 00:15

Let us know if the bar of soap works!

Duvetdweller · 04/08/2021 00:15

Go to the GP and ask to be prescribed Ropinirole - it’s a tablet that is similar to a Parkinson’s drug and it works. The only thing that works in my experience.
