To still be taking precautions re covid during pregnancy?

Hi all I am currently 20 weeks pregnant with my first. Where I live covid cases are still quite high and I haven't had the vaccines yet (personal choice, would rather wait). I am anxious about getting covid whilst pregnant and have told family and friends I'm going to be avoiding mixing unnecessarily and being as careful as possible. Unfortunately I feel like my partner's family don't really understand this and seem to think I'm being paranoid or over reacting because the rest of society seems to be getting back to normal. MIL said that a big group of family members are visiting next week and she expects us (me and OH) to be there as they will all want to see us, but I don't feel comfortable with me currently being unvaccinated and pregnant. Are my OH's family right in that I'm being paranoid and ridiculous? Please can we keep the vaccine in pregnancy debate out of this as I am aware of all the evidence but would still rather wait a little longer! Thanks all

As many others have said the vaccine is the best protection for you and your baby .
That said vaccination or no vaccination in pregnancy I wouldn’t attend large gatherings either so totally support your keeping a low profile .

OP asked people to keep the vaccine debate out of it yet loads of you are telling her to get vaccinated?!

To me it’s a bit like someone coming along and saying, Hey, my house is at flood risk in the next few hours and the rain’s coming down hard; should I get sandbags or a canoe while I wait it out? I don’t want to use the rescue service that’s coming by. People would reasonably come along and advise to get out of there.

It’s a clumsy analogy in lots of ways that I’m sure people will be happy to point out but when you’ve got an obvious option in front of you, sometimes it’s advisable to take the obvious option. Getting vaccinated is much more likely to reduce the OP’s risk than faffing around at the margins like this. Delta is really readily transmissable, so going or not going to MIL’s party doesn’t mean that the OP won’t pick it up on a necessary trip to Sainsbury’s/the hospital/wherever, or that her partner won’t pick it up and bring it home.

Stick to your guns OP. I am double jabbed, and I am avoiding crowded places, still wearing a mask etc., as that is what makes me comfortable.

Greenrubber · 04/08/2021 09:05

This is the thing tho there are double vaccinated people still getting a bad case if covid so the best thing you can do it take precautions to avoid catching covid for example not going to lareg family gathering

Your body, your baby, your choice x

Yanbu to avoid a big family gathering or any large gatherings. Covid numbers during the first wave were low in pregnant women, as social contact was so reduced. Now, with the delta variant and widespread mixing happening, unvaccinated pregnant women are extremely vulnerable. Front line NHS staff are shielding from 28 weeks(in my Trust)
I have seen some incredibly sick pregnant women, requiring ITU admission and their babies having to be delivered prematurely.
It's not an easy decision to have the vaccine during pregnancy, but from what I have seen, and because of more evidence now available, I most definitely would.

@Greenrubber

But we don't the personal background of any of these people health wise age etc it's not one size fits all

Doses given 85.5M
Fully vaccinated 38.6M
% of population fully vaccinated 57.9%

And 1,102 deaths after vaccine.

Pretty good odds no??

Reallybadidea · 04/08/2021 09:46

This kind of thing really makes me cross. It is misleading and dangerous. Midwives and even GPs do not have the specialist knowledge and training to overrule what the JCVI advise. It also goes against what the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the Royal College of Midwives advise.

This is the thing tho there are double vaccinated people still getting a bad case

Vaccination massively reducea the risk though. As of early July there were no pregnant women admitted to hospital with covid who were double jabbed.

Reallybadidea · 04/08/2021 09:48

"This kind of thing" being midwives advising against vaccination

Greenrubber · 04/08/2021 10:08

@IcedSpice

Considering 2/3 of pregnant women will be asymptomatic how many asymptomatic people have died?

How many healthy people under 50 have died?

Greenrubber · 04/08/2021 10:23

It's not one size fits all and people not wanting the vaccine is their right

Everyone should weigh up their own odds obviously but not everyone gets seriously ill with covid

We were discussing the safety of the vaccine against covid

Is it more dangerous to have the vaccination or covid?

Doses given 85.5M - And 1,102 deaths after vaccine
Fully vaccinated 38.6M

coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/deaths
Deaths with COVID-19 on the death certificate 153,734

To me this says the risk of death (worst case scenario) from Covid is much higher than death (worst case scenario) from the vaccine

Greenrubber · 04/08/2021 10:37

No we are in a thread where the op has decided against the vaccine and everyone is telling her to have it but no one knows her actually circumstances so can't judge her
