To Not Know If I Need To Pack Spare Uniform When DD Starts School?

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 03/08/2021 11:14

DD is starting primary school in September and just wondering, is it the done thing to pack a spare uniform in her bag in case she gets wet/spills her lunch down herself etc, as I did when she was at nursery? I know there’s always the school office lost property box but just thought should I pack spare clothes in case there’s nothing in the lost property box that fits her? I wouldn’t want her to spend the day feeling silly if she was made to wear clothes 4 sizes too big for example? Or am I being ridiculous?! Thanks!

Ours kept their PE Kit in school full-time. It only came home at half term for washing. I put spare pants and socks in there. They usually have plenty of spare uniform.

I am a teacher and also have young dc. I would put a spare pair of pants and tracksuit bottoms in the bag. The school probably have spares but it's handy to have them. Does your child have many accidents? Mine didn't but once did have a accident on the school tour (the only day I didn't pack clothes)

I never sent DD1 with a spare uniform but she does have a spare pair of nickers and shorts in her bag just in case. She’s not needed them so far.

My children have been given spares if necessary or sometimes they put their p e kit on. I've never sent spare uniform in.

Pegasusmail · 03/08/2021 11:17

Spills down the top - the clothes just come home like a graffiti splashed with yoghurt. Highly unlikely to need a change of top

The school I work in and my DD’s school have started wearing PE kit all day because of covid. They’re planning to carry it on next year. Great for not having to get changed. Not great when they need a change of clothes.

She shouldn’t need a whole spare uniform, just knickers/tights if you think she’s likely to have an accident. Put the spares in her PE kit, and make sure she knows they are there.

DC's school requested that you didn't bring in extra items (lack of space to store them) so would not have expected/wanted spare uniform. They had loads of spares in Reception.
I'd suggest asking your school if they don't bring it up themselves in any parents' meeting/information.

pitterpatterrain · 03/08/2021 11:21

I would normally put a change of pants and bottoms (skirt / joggers) just in case

mummymummymummummum · 03/08/2021 11:29

For the first few months I put in spare knickers and tights. DD used to have regular accidents at preschool which I always suspected were laziness/because she liked the attention.

After two accidents at school (clearly not accompanied by the help she was used to) she managed the rest of the year just fine (and also at home!). Never needed spare t-shirts etc.

Knickers and tights fitted just fine in her book bag and thus drawer.

DS has just finished Reception. He was having a lot of poo accidents so not the normal situation but he carried a bag in every day with spare pants, trousers, wipes and nappy sacks for dirty pants.

No need for a top though, lunch stains are what they are and stay that way till home time!

DD hasn't had the same issues DS had so in a year's time she'll be starting Reception and I won't be sending all the spares DS had.

TeaAndTrifle · 03/08/2021 12:13

I've always packed a spare set of clothes in my kids bags. They've never had toilet accidents at school but there's been the odd occasion where they've sat/fallen into a massive puddle so it was more comfortable for them to change. So a change of bottoms/pants/socks has definitely been handy.

SemiFeralDalek · 03/08/2021 13:57

Mine's going into reception, just been in school nursery. He's got spare underpants in his pe kit bag but that's it. Any accidents they changed him into school spares and then I washed and returned.

Best bet is to ask the school.

Most days my ds came out looking like he'd had a fight with a frube and lost, coupled with poster paint, glitter and snot and slightly damp or gravelly from the sand and water tray Grin dragged through a hedge backwards but had a brilliant time is the way school uniform is supposed to be!

eightyfourandahalf · 03/08/2021 14:00

ASK the school.

It used to be standard to take spare clothes and PE kit, but some schools banned it because of covid.
Now kids wear their PE kit on PE day, no spare clothes.

So who knows what weird rules yours might have, check.

DingDongThongs · 03/08/2021 19:48

oh yes, they will get into an activity and oopsy pee in knicks!

Di11y · 03/08/2021 20:19

Another to say spare knickers and make sure your child knows where they are but they have a bit of uniform or put them in pe kit ime

FunMcCool · 03/08/2021 20:55

My DC is starting school in September and we’ve been told to send in spare clothes.

monkeymoonpig · 03/08/2021 21:07

I always sent spare uniform in for Reception aged kids. Not often used but when needed it was there. They were no different to the rest of the class if they had an accident.

IHateCoronavirus · 03/08/2021 21:22

Hi op I always popped a spare set of knickers and socks in my DC’s bags just in case they were ever needed.

We send kids home in their PE kit. We have a box of spares also but they might be a little mismatched.

Can I take the opportunity to plea that if DC is sent home in school underwear/socks etc that they be washed and returned to school.

Socks often need changing due to accidents or getting wet in water play. Once our stock is depleted there is nothing we can do (unless we keep buying socks, which I have done in the past). If the heating is on we can try and dry out your child’s socks on the heaters, but otherwise it is damp socks or no socks depending on how wet they are. Please don’t get mad at staff if your child finds them in this situation [sighs].
