To think they should have made a decision by now?

I recently interviewed for a nanny role via a recruitment agency. I had to go through all the normal checks, DBS etc. The agency put my profile forward to the family who seemed to like me. So far we've had 3 zoom meetings and we've also met for a coffee. We met just over a week ago and it went well, but I've heard nothing back. They did say they'd be in touch when I last spoke to them so I'm a bit disappointed.

Would it be pushy of me to contact the agency and ask if the family have made a decision yet? I appreciate the job is a lot more personal compared to a "normal" job as I'd be working in their home and looking after their child, so I understand it's a big decision to make, but I do think I've been more than patient and it would be nice to know if their actually interested or not (if not I can start looking for something else).

No, contact the agency, that’s the benefit of going through one.

But just FTI- my boss has been interviewing my maternity replacement (I’m also a nanny) and oh my gosh was she intense with it. The nanny she ended up going with had

  • initial zoom chat
-visit to house to formally interview
  • coffee in a cafe me and then phone call with the nanny before that (who’d retired four years ago!)
-came over to meet the children and had tour of house etc -trial afternoon -last zoom chat

This took place over WEEKS. I had similar too and almost didn’t take the job because of it. The children aren’t little and have no special needs, and although I appreciate it’s not an easy decision I thought the process was really intense and drawn out.

Definitely talk to the agency. They may have other placements for you, so that the family understand you cannot wait around endlessly.

I'm sure it's a thorough process but ime, if you are their first choice they don't mess around because they would want to secure you

SmidgenofaPigeon yikes, sounds like your boss has slightly lost sight of the fact that interviews are for employee to assess employer too. That sounds a bit excessive.

@user16395699 yes, that’s about the long and short of it, but she’s an incredibly intense person generally. She would have actually been shocked if the potential nanny and got another job in the mean time, while she was taking this long to make a decision.

I would definitely contact the agency. You have a life to get on with.

Thanks for your messages! I'll give the agency a ring tomorrow and ask for feedback.

They currently have a nanny who they are having problems with and want to replace so I'm not sure if it has anything to do with that. Maybe they are still trying to figure out how to approach the situation. The job was advertised as an August start but it seems unlikely now.

I've been a nanny for years but I've never gone through an agency before. I've been lucky enough to find family's online or through word of mouth so this is a whole new experience for me. The agency have been lovely though and very helpful so I'm sure they won't mind me ringing them tomorrow Smile
