Do you wash brand new clothes before putting them on your newborn baby?

We're expecting a baby in a couple weeks and just been out buying some baby clothes with a friend. On the way home she mentions, all you have to do now is wash all these new clothes and iron them just in time for baby's arrival.

AIBU to put new clothes straight on my baby without washing them first? Is this a done thing or is she being unreasonable?
This includes packaged clothes. She said everything gets washed and sterilised before use.

NC because I didn't do this with my first DC and feel like a terrible mum 😭

I think you should wash because of something like chemicals they use on clothes when they transport them. I’m going to wash all mine soon. But fuck ironing them!

Merryoldgoat · 02/08/2021 17:52

I washed them but didn’t iron them.

However my children wore nothing but babygros for as long as possible.

Greenbks · 02/08/2021 17:52

Yes it’s recommended clothes are washed first, I’m due in a few weeks and have taken the tags off everything snd will be doing this in the next two weeks. You didn’t know so don’t be too hard on yourself and your first baby was perfectly fine!

Alltimeblow · 02/08/2021 17:53

I never bothered with my eldest but my youngest had terrible eczema from about 8 weeks so everything had to be washed. Absolutely didn't iron everything though!

eightyfourandahalf · 02/08/2021 17:53

I always do a full wash for all baby/ young child clothes and beddings.

I do a short wash for MY clothes and normal wash for beddings.

At least I know what washing powder I am using.

FunTimes2020 · 02/08/2021 17:54

It never crossed my mind to wash new baby clothes, but my teen survived BlushGrin

CatCup · 02/08/2021 17:54

No, I never did.

Lawnpop · 02/08/2021 17:54

I wash everything because I’ve no idea what they’ve been in contact in the factory or through the journey. I’ve never ironed them though

PurpleFlower1983 · 02/08/2021 17:55

I did for my first but I haven’t bothered with my second Grin

RhonaRed · 02/08/2021 17:55

Yes.

Ohshittt · 02/08/2021 17:55

I never did and my 2.5 year old doesn't seem any worse off for my tardiness!

golddustwomen · 02/08/2021 17:56

I didn't with either of mine.

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 02/08/2021 17:56

I'd wash them, newborn babies often have sensitive skin. I wouldn't bother ironing, and I don't use non-bio like a lot of people stick to. Bio is fine even for babies.

clickychicky · 02/08/2021 17:58

Yes. You don't know how sensitive your babies clothes will be. Don't bother ironing.

clickychicky · 02/08/2021 17:58

SmidgenofaPigeon · 02/08/2021 17:58

@Ohshittt

Tardiness means being being late. Unless you’re still thinking of washing them but haven’t yet Grin

I’m only mentioning it because I didn’t used to use that word properly, I’m not being mean.

Saidtoomuch · 02/08/2021 17:59

I did with my first but not second. I stopped because I hung out the beautiful new clothes on the washing line and next doors chimney dumped soot on them 😥 (their hot water was fueled by the aga).

pinkcircustop · 02/08/2021 17:59

Nope. I have a baby and I’ve never washed her clothes before she’s worn them Confused

ElizaDoolots · 02/08/2021 18:00

I was them yes but definitely not ironing them!

Branster · 02/08/2021 18:00

I wash my own brand new clothes before I wear them so I'd always wash those for my children before they wear them.
They've been handled by lots of people before they get on your baby, there could be dust or residue of any origin including from dyes all the way from when the fabric was produced to the packing station in the delivery warehouse. During storage there might have been mice climbing around stacks of clothes.
Anything.

eightyfourandahalf · 02/08/2021 18:01

I am not sure I would "sterilise" clothes before use though... washing is enough.

but once you have a baby, Napisan is quite useful too.

Poppins2016 · 02/08/2021 18:05

Chemicals such as formaldehyde are often used to keep new clothing mould/mildew and wrinkle-free in transit.

I wash all clothes (incl. adult) and bedding before use for this reason.

I certainly don't bother ironing baby clothes though!

miltonj · 02/08/2021 18:05

Nope I didn't. I washed the ones given by a friend but not new ones from shops. I know a lot of people do that and it's quite normal. Ironing them is not normal though.

Thehop · 02/08/2021 18:06

I wash and iron everything before we wear it. I loved getting the babies clothes ready.

Baby clothes to remove any chemical residue.

All clothes incase some scruff in the factory scratches their bum then stitches a hem on my stuff with bum hair in their hands.

doadeer · 02/08/2021 18:06

I did wash mine just so they were all soft and clean but never ironed a thing and never would
