To not know how to dry your swimming stuff in a naice hotel?

NeverRTFT · 02/08/2021 17:19

I understand that in a naice hotel in Europe it is considered unacceptable to dry your swimwear on the balcony overnight. However, I am currently staying in such a hotel - ie somewhere a bit posher than we usually go for, and have seen on trip advisor that other guests get sniffy if someone uses balcony to dry their stuff - and I cannot fathom how or where you are meant to dry everything?
If just me and DH we could try to drip dry in bathroom but it's pretty steamy in there after shower. With 2 DC swimwear thrown in there's no way.
If you know your way around posh hotel etiquette please fill me in. I'm stumped.

Why not just dry it on the balcony because it's the best way to do it and fuck what everyone else thinks, especially since you'll never see them again?

MargosKaftan · 02/08/2021 17:25

Still on balcony.

lurker101 · 02/08/2021 17:26

We have dried our stuff on the balcony in nice hotels, as have other guests, and it doesn’t seem to have been an issue - but never over the balcony railings (if you see what I mean). Although maybe I’ve been committing a terrible faux pas 😂

MoiraNotRuby · 02/08/2021 17:26

I would expect it to have a heated towel rail and use that?

Geamhradh · 02/08/2021 17:28

Where did you get the idea from that you can't do it?
I only go in 4* and up if I'm on holiday and I'll dry my pants out there as well. (I'd better check they've not lost any stars from the likes of me staying Grin)

SW1amp · 02/08/2021 17:28

Is there a retractable clothes line attached to the wall opposite the shower, but in a nice chrome unit..?
I’ve stayed in a few hotels which have them, the connect into a little notch in the tiles to form a drying line for swimwear overnight

Or as pp said, use the towel rail

Mindymomo · 02/08/2021 17:32

What I did learn from my MIL was when you’ve wrung out as much water as you can. Roll the item in a towel and squeeze and roll this to get even more water out. Then hang in room on hangers or bathroom when not in use. This is what we did in the days before balconies. If sitting out on balcony, put item on back of chair or seat.

icedcoffees · 02/08/2021 17:33

I wouldn't dry on the balcony as I'd be worried about it being blown off and lost or ruined.

I dry stuff in the bathroom on a heated towel rail, or hung over the bath. Never had an issue.

Kanaloa · 02/08/2021 17:34

Do it on the balcony. Honestly if you’re complaining on trip advisor about someone’s swimming costume on their own balcony your holiday must have been really boring.

Stompythedinosaur · 02/08/2021 17:34

I hang them on the balcony but try to be a bit discrete - like over a chair pushed to the corner that won't ruin anyone else's view.

SeasonFinale · 02/08/2021 17:35

On the balcony but I take pegs with me and peg it to the chairs there if the hotel has a no towel over balcony railings policy but not many do

NeverRTFT · 02/08/2021 17:39

Awesome. Our stuff is on balcony now (but not over the front balcony rail, just over chair backs/arms) and you lot have reassured me about the faux pas. As you say, if that's what you put on trip advisor then the holiday must have been very boring!
Thanks all. Off for sundowners now 🍹

The last 5* European hotel I stayed in actually had one of those retractable washing lines on one side of the balcony, so I figured I was good to go.

They were clearly used to drying French budgie smugglers only though, as there was no way there was enough room on it for all our stuff (family of 5 in interconnecting rooms) so we still had to drape things across chair backs as well.

Yes, this, but the best way to get as much water out is to put the rolled towel on the floor and then walk sideways up and down it. Your bodyweight will push out far more water than wringing ever could unless you have crazy grip strength.
Phineyj · 02/08/2021 17:48

Squeeze them in towels to get out as much water as possible and put them on damp? Although I'd just use the balcony if you've not been told you can't.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 02/08/2021 17:52

Balcony

Crockof · 02/08/2021 18:12

You mean you haven't taken enough pairs of swimwear that you have new ones everytime you get wet... Shock Grin

Put your bra and pant and dh Y fronts first night then the other guests will be relieved second night that it is only swim wear?

TillyTopper · 02/08/2021 18:15

I just roll it in a towel and give it a twist so it's almost dry, Then I put it on the heated towel rail or coat hangers. Not cos I don't want to use the bathroom but because I don't want it to be blown away!

Drape it over chairs on balcony. I wouldn't put it on the balcony rails for fear of losing it to wind etc but otherwise wouldn't give a shit about other guests. Only ever travel luxury style. I do what I want within societal norms
EnglishScot · 02/08/2021 18:18

On the chairs on the balcony rather than over the edge

NumberTheory · 02/08/2021 18:20

I dry in the bathroom because if we have a balcony I want to be sitting on it, not using it for laundry! If you leave the fan on in the bathroom it should soon lose the fogginess and things should dry out relatively well - assuming enough hanging space to not have it bunched up.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with using the furniture on the balcony as you have, though.

Serenissima21 · 02/08/2021 18:23

A good hotel should have a clothes horse (mini) on a balcony. Or depending where you are, you might find one on the beach.

shouldistop · 02/08/2021 18:23

On the chairs on the balcony.
How sad would you have to be to complain about that on trip adviser. I swear some people go on holiday just to find new things to whinge about.

BlithePilgrim · 02/08/2021 18:29

If it’s that high-end, surely staff will take it and dry it for you? Back in my high-end hotel chambermaiding days, we would dry swimwear.

DinosaurDiana · 02/08/2021 18:29

I always dry mine on the balcony, even at the 5* hotels.
