BBC Olympic coverage

Posting for traffic , however I feel the coverage despite not covering as much having sold out to discovery channel is as good with all the pundits being in a studio in the UK without the expense of them and all of the hangers on having to travel to Tokyo as well as the covid risk

Watching some of the BMX coverage though isnt about time we had a younger set of presenters to present this rather than the fella they had last night who was doing the verbal equivalent of Dad dancing trying to explain a few things

So would it be unreasonable for the bbc to cut some expensive jollys out and get some young fresh presenters the same generation as the athletes ?

The BBC spens way too much on sending people places. I don't imagine it's much fun for the journos/presenters either. They have too many "overlapping" people - i.e from different BBC channels.
Also it is utterly stupid when they send people to stand outside Westminster/ No10/ wherever to present stuff - it adds nothing except expense.

billysboy · 02/08/2021 16:47

just seem to be so many hangers on and unnecessary expense

I believe that presenters and commentators are largely in the UK this time, for obvious reasons.

You don't think the studio is really in a greenhouse on top of a Tokyo skyscraper do you???

No. If you read the OP properly, she is actually saying the presenting is just as good from the UK.

So where are the expensive jollies to? Salford?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 02/08/2021 17:23

The BMX commentators were

Ed Leigh - who has been a professional snowboarder amongst many other things.

Jon Taylor - a hugely respected professional BMX rider and manager of the Vans team.

Tim Warwood - UK champion snowboarder aged 20.

You'd be hard pressed to find people more qualified to speak about the subject.

Just because you hear the voices of people in their forties, that doesn't mean they don't know exactly what they're talking about.

billysboy · 02/08/2021 17:46

I am saying it is just as good without the expense of sending everyone to Tokyo

Surely have a commentator that is the me age as some of the people that are competing , would this not encourage a fresh look at it and maybe more relative
I dont doubt that the current crop are well qualified but they are not any where near the same age as some of the competitors

I love Ed Leigh so for that YABU!

Oh, so they're past it because they know what they're talking about?

I suppose you might be able to find a 14 year old able to talk about BMX endlessly commentate somewhere. Odds are that if they have enough knowledge to be able to commentate, they're actually still busy competing, though.

iamtopazmortmain · 02/08/2021 17:53

I have really enjoyed the presenting and commentating on the BBC. Lots of new faces, lots of women, and lots of people who actually participate/ have participated in the sports. I thought the commentary on the BMX competition was excellent and highly informative. I am very shocked that anyone out of their 20s is too old to present or comment given the obvious expertise of the commentators. OP - that is a =n incredibly ageist point of view.

BlackberrySky · 02/08/2021 17:55

Why do they need to be the same age? Surely it's more important that they know what they are talking about? In many cases this means having some experience under your belt. Personally I don't think I would have preferred sixteen year olds commentating on the gymnastics to experienced Olympians for example.
