Can anyone help me decide on which job

I’ve the option of changing job soon but can’t decide what to do. Current job is very very busy I work 2 long days and a half day. Work most Saturdays but have flexibility to take some off. 20 minute drive away.

New job less than 10 minute drive, will be very relaxed as I’ll more or less be my own boss, 4 short days ie 5 hours a day, work most Saturdays with not as much flexibility but can still be off every second one.

I’m thinking I should take new job but would welcome anyone’s opinion. Thanks

So many factors to consider, do you need childcare, are there the same perks in the new job or even better perks, pay wise will you be on the same, how stable is the new role? Is it a role you'll enjoy?

NuffSaidSam · 02/08/2021 00:54

What are the pay and conditions like in each role?

Which five hours of the day is it in the second job? Is it morning/afternoon/school hours? And does that suit you.

I empathise with your dilemma, having been in the same situation (deciding between jobs) quite recently.

Hopefully you'll have plenty of replies, because I found other people's perspectives helped me move forward.

Which job pays more? What are the people like or would you prefer to be your own boss? Are you looking for earnings or a career move, or is job satisfaction more important to you?

In the end, it boils down to what you want out of a job. Sometimes the not-so-good option is worth it for a career move, as a stepping-stone to something else. But if that's no longer an important factor (as is the case for me), the decision is really about what appeals most. I have gone for the option which is harder work but is closer to home and which fits in much better with my lifestyle. Good luck!

You talk about the hours but not the actual roles…..which might you enjoy more or is the actual work exactly the same?

Kalvinette · 02/08/2021 06:02

You've mentioned hours and distance but you havent mentioned

  1. Pay
  2. Trajectory: is this second job more exciting, will you be learning new skills in it, is it a step up?

Similar roles but the new job is much quieter. There won’t be any career progression but that doesn’t bother me. Money slightly better in new job. Will need a few more hours childcare but that’s not really an issue as we have loads of options. It’s an opportunity that won’t come up again in my working life so I think I’ll have to consider it.

For the new job, are you assured that once you are there, the daily hours won't increase?

Kalvinette · 02/08/2021 11:38

I would take the new job definitely

parietal · 02/08/2021 11:46

new job sounds pretty good

Sprig1 · 02/08/2021 11:50

Might the new job be boring after a while if it is much slower paced? Why are you thinking of leaving your current job? What do you do outside of work and how much will that be affected by the increased hours. They both have quite a few downsides, might there be a job number 3 that you haven't found yet?
