To get an older used car for my first car or something newer

I'm going to look at a car today which is Citroën c1 and has really good mot and service history and 1 previous owner. The milage is only 33000 which is low but appears to have been well looked after.
Only thing is it's 10 years old, first registered december 2011 - is that too old?

I tend to go for cars that are a bit newer than that - my last car was 7 years old, the one before that was 5 - but if the service history is good and it has a low mileage like that and the price was right, I'd possibly go for it. It depends if there are any similar cars that are newer around.

We have a 2008 C1 and it's been no problem for the three years we have had it - only annoyance is our model doesn't have air con.

Depends what they want for it! Used cars are top dollar prices at the moment due to demand. I bought an 8 year old Skoda fabia last month and am really pleased with it (previously had an all singing all dancing suv)

My first car was younger than that but it depends on how much you are willing to pay and how much mileage you would add. My DF found my first car and the plan was that I would upgrade. I didnt as I loved it so much.

Used cars are in great demand at the moment. As long as it has been looked after I think a 10 year old car will be fine.

Ten years isn't really old for a car particularly if it has low mileage

I’d get it, insurance is likely to be cheap too which is worth considering the first time you get a car.

Quincejam · 01/08/2021 10:12

Our insurance costs about £500 for our 19yo

Lizzyblue · 01/08/2021 10:14

Yeah the insurance works out at £40 a month

I’d go for it, insurance is the main consideration for a first car imo. Has it got a full service history? Any issues with congestion charging or similar in your city that the car would fall foul of?

It sounds great and if you can afford it outright then do it

StoneofDestiny · 01/08/2021 17:44

Depends what you can afford. I'd buy a 2 year old car which comes with 3/4 year warranty. Repairs to cars are expensive.

Low mileage on an old car is not good news. Cars don't like sitting around doing nothing. At 3,000 miles a year it's potentially just been pootled around town. This is especially a problem if car is diesel.

A well maintened newer high miler that's done lots of motorway miles (easy on cars) is on average a much better option.

Though of course it all depends on the car
