Will my baby's cough ever go away?

Posting here for traffic..

15 Month old has had a wet cough since May. She's also had a bit of a runny nose so the GP thinks it's probably bronchiolitis but that's only meant to last 3 weeks. Back in June she was put on a week of amoxicillan which didn't help much. GP has since given an inhaler but that doesn't seem to do anything either.

It's particularly bad at night and early morning, meaning she doesn't get much sleep and neither do we(!). On that basis we have a private appointment next week with a respiratory consultant to see if he thinks its asthma.

I feel so sorry for her as it's so bad and she has a rattlely/wheezy chest a lot of the time. She is otherwise well though and eating fine, though a couple of weeks ago she developed a temperature and didn't eat much for almost a week. Negative covid Psr test. Those symptoms have gone and she s back to eating loads but it takes so much energy from her.

Anyone else experienced this and had an answer? I've just read something online about PBB, wondering if that could be it. Another 6 days til we see the doctor seems so long even though obviously she's had the discomfort for much longer.

Have you tried home remedies so warmed honey in her milk or a pinch of tumeric mixed into warmed honey every evening.
Obviously not loads but just once a Day.

My DS, who is now 5, suffered terribly from coughs - after a cold (which were frequent!) he would have a lingering cough for weeks on end which was always worse at night. No real solutions I’m afraid, he also got prescribed an inhaler which did help a bit, try making sure your DD has it every night at bedtime regardless of whether she’s coughing right then. ,
We also tried a humidifier which was some help, although leaves you with soaking wet windows every morning! No cough syrup or medicine has ever touched the sides unfortunately.

Many interrupted nights for all of us over the years, but things have improved as he’s got older, perhaps because his airways have got bigger or something, I don’t know.

Honestly OP I I could write this a million times. Just what I'm going through now with my 3 yr old DS

he usually has coughs faster than a cold but then he has had this chronic cough since last year I don't know what else to do

If his cough isn't caused by a cold, it is otherwise triggered by his snoring. I took him to the GP who said his throat is clear and he probably has swollen tonsils but they don't do that Operation anymore to take them out ( which tbh I'm happy about) but I only have one good night sleep in about 2 weeks

It's getting slightly better now .I have tried everything raw honey alone, raw honey ACV, GINGER ,gosh I pity the poor boy , anti allergy pillows, changing his sleeping position, vapoyr rub on feet and out socks on

Honestly I don't think there is a direct wayout of it if they have tried diagnosing and didn't see anything

Sorry if I'm not being coherent..it's just so much lack of sleep 😴😴

So just like PP had said, things should get better as they get older but I would suggest you try honey in warm water, and the rub under feet with socks on.

You never know what can touch it

Nasal spray - if your DC has a blocked nose

Just did the same for my son and he just slept off.

saveyourbreath · 01/08/2021 04:01

@Hannsmum

Why are you happy they don’t do the operation which would help him?

my DS’ tonsils and adenoids came out when he was almost 4 due to constant coughs and choking in his sleep. The relief was instant and he’s now 7 with no coughs or even colds really since it was done. Has been a god send

Hannsmum · 01/08/2021 04:22

@saveyourbreath not that I'm happy in that sense. But the thought of doing that to him scares the shit out of me. Mayb I don't know the details of that Operation that's why

Think I just have a phobia for operations having had some myself

However I don't think he has reached that stage for me to push for it. If it is necessary I would. But the Paediatrician said they don't do it randomly anymore on the NHS so hopefully he would outgrow it. And to be honest he is getting better than when this started last year so in hoping he does get better

@saveyourbreath that's interesting about the tonsils and adenoid operation. I had both done when I was about 6. I assume I had frequent tonsillitis but didn't know that coughs and choking in sleep were related.

@Sh05 to be honest I haven't tried honey as I have been a bit wary of it given that they're not meant to have it under 12 months. I might give it a go this evening then with the turmeric. thanks for the suggestion

I know I'm late to this thread... very late.

My 18mo has had a cough since Nov 2023 and it's now June 2024!

We've had every treatment possible- please tell me it gets better?!
