To expect painter to cover things, or clean up?

We've returned to our house to move furniture around so the painter has clear rooms to work in next week. A drop sheet over the sofa, but there a paint splatters on my hoover, wooden floor boards, kitchen cupboards and even my house plants!!! AIBU to expect these things to be moved, covered or at least cleaned off afterwards?

Yanbu
Husband is decorator, and absolutely always makes sure everything is covered etc so that when he leaves you don't know he's been there.
We had some patio doors fitted last year and the guy couldn't possibly cover the floor, and now there is still plaster residue on the lino. Yes it's shitty lino but it's our shitty lino and now it looks even shitier.
It's not hard to cover stuff up, it really isn't.

No competent decorator should leave any paint on any surface that was not supposed to be painted.
I've been a decorator for years. I never leave any paint spots/ splatters.

Everything should be covered, in case of accident. If you've got good technique, v v little paint ever ends up where it's not meant to.

I can understand an accidental swipe of a brush or drip, but surely it should then be cleaned up? DH says its water based, so comes off easily, but I don't feel we should then spend a day having to clean every surface that has been left with paint on. The pics are only a fraction of the bits with paint on. I don't even know how I'm supposed to clean paint of a cactus?

TBH I move stuff out of the way or cover it if I can't move it, myself.

Eleoura · 31/07/2021 21:58

@FangsForTheMemory- I did move everything out of the room, except the sofa and 3 pot plants! The vacuum was left in a different room, but I said he could use it for dust if needed. Other than plants, the main things with paint marks are immovable things like a bathroom wall mirror, kitchen cupboards, floor boards!

No i wouldnt be happy with that

Somanysocks · 31/07/2021 22:04

He should have his own vacuum cleaner not use yours. Maybe use a female decorator another time, we are much better.

I always make sure things are covered or moved out of the way, you should have moved the plants though.

The photo you provided! Wow, that's just outrageous! Is he a cheeky, lazy blighter who doesn't give a toss..or two years old🤔

That’s really bad on the cupboards.

My decorator, sadly retired now, painted all my new house (blue in some rooms to cover the bad purple) with brand new cream carpets already fitted upstairs.

There was just one tiny spot the size of a match head on a window when he’d finished. He shouted at himself

Elouera · 08/08/2021 19:57

Update: When the painter had done, he had already cleaned off alot of the excess paint. I still had to point out other areas, but he seemed fine with that. Will still need to clean off dust where they sanded and still have splatter on my plants, but its much better than when I 1st saw it.

MaMelon · 08/08/2021 20:01

Our painter covered everything in plastic sheeting - everything. I’d been really worried as we’d just had a new kitchen and utility room put in but there wasn’t a spot of paint to be seen anywhere once they’d finished. I wouldn’t be happy with the mess they’ve left at all.

ShakesSnakesSh0w · 08/08/2021 22:42

Sounds like the decorator had too much paint on the brush or roller

I watched a professional decorator in the office

Nothing put to cover anything

No splashes at all

If I am decorating at home, I cover everything, just in case !

bridgetreilly · 08/08/2021 23:17

I wouldn’t care about the hoover or the plants. But the floorboards and cupboards are absolutely not acceptable. He needs to clean up.
