Stairlift rental from Stannah

MollysMummy2010 · 31/07/2021 18:25

Hi - just really what it says in the title. Has anyone done this and could give me an idea of the cost?
Trying to get a grant for my MIL but may not come through before she is likely to need to come home.

Don’t know about Stannah, but I think that some councils rent them out. Might be worth contacting the social care department of your DM’s local council see if they have any advice.

kittykarate · 31/07/2021 20:55

I think the price varies for stairlifts depending on the complexity of the track, e.g. straight is much cheaper than staircases with a turn.

pussycatlickinglollyices · 31/07/2021 21:41

Shop around.
Stannah were expensive when I had to have one fitted for my Dad. (If you ended up buying one from them, they will buy it back but not for much if it's been regularly serviced.)
Try Ableworld my NDN has recently had one fitted and he's v happy with it.

WombatStewForTea · 31/07/2021 21:44

I believe there's a really strong market for second hand stair lifts so might be worth checking

Charlieiscool · 31/07/2021 21:47

I don’t know about rental but we paid about £5,000 for a Stannah for my mum and once the guarantee runs out servicing and repairs are astronomically expensive. I’m pretty sure a call out was £200 but I could be wrong because it was a while ago.

Darbs76 · 31/07/2021 21:48

My parents bought one rather than rented and it was around £1500. That was a few years ago. My mum decided to keep it after my dad passed incase she needs it!!

MollysMummy2010 · 31/07/2021 22:05

Gosh @Darbs76 where did you did that from?

Whoever you decide to go with, make sure that they are open evenings and weekends, Stannahs prices are higher, but the service is better in my experience.

Rentals are covered for everything.

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 31/07/2021 22:14

I know we have local companies that are better than Stannah. Have a look at what is available locally
If the stairs are straight you can buy them reconditioned at a very reasonable price. They are surprisingly cheap to rent too
Any that employ sales reps will cost more. I know of 2 local companies that provide the same starlift. The one with sales reps are twice as much as the other

DeathByWalkies · 31/07/2021 22:16

I'd only go for a rental if it was for someone with a terminal diagnosis and you don't expect them to be around for too long.

If it's for someone who is just old, it's almost certain that buying will be cheaper. They've come down a lot in recent years - the same stairlift installed in about 2003 and 2018 (the owner outlived it) was less than half the price in 2018

Shop around - if you have a standard straight stairlift then second hand is often a possibility.

WombatStewForTea · 31/07/2021 23:25

OP I'm sure my friend payed around that for her 2nd hand one

Floralnomad · 31/07/2021 23:30

We got my mums from Dolphin mobility , they did a few different makes and were way cheaper than Stannah , who at that time a few years ago , wouldn’t actually tell you a price you had to have a visit and it was as bad as a double glazing salesman .

MollysMummy2010 · 01/08/2021 00:46

We had acorn out for a quote and it was £5500

@MollysMummy2010

At those prices, if in the last few years, it must have been a 3-4 storey home?
Darbs76 · 01/08/2021 06:55

@MollysMummy2010 - they got it from a local company in North Wales

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 01/08/2021 13:26

Are the stairs straight or curved?

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 01/08/2021 13:30

Would moving your MIL bed downstairs be an option? A lot of people turn dining rooms into bedrooms.

titchy · 01/08/2021 13:41

As others have said there's a buoyant second hand market which is a lot cheaper!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/08/2021 14:17

(If you ended up buying one from them, they will buy it back but not for much if it's been regularly serviced)

Not any more; Stannah (and several others, I believe) stopped that some time ago, even with ones they'd originally sold on that basis
Nowadays they source most of their second hand ones on ebay, though they'll gnerously de-install your own for about £200 (Hmm)

Grinch48 · 02/08/2021 13:38

What part of the country are you OP
My dads just gone into a nursing home and he has a straight up one that we are looking to get rid off - no idea how 😂
It was put in by a local company and has been serviced every year

Ofalltheginjoints · 02/08/2021 13:46

I got mine from Dolphin mobility and it was around £2100 that was for a specific model though and they did have other options at a cheaper level to buy, might be worth contacting your local showroom to see if they can give a free quote?

When I had stannah out directly they were most expensive so worth shopping around, acorn weren't too bad but didn't have the style I wanted

MollysMummy2010 · 08/08/2021 23:55

Sorry all for the disappearing act but hopes I had got this sorted through a charity but turns out she had “forgotten” about an isa….she needs a very small turn at the bottom and I am a bit concerned that the landing at the top is so small if she stands up she might just fall right back down the stairs unless we do another turn up there. She is being sent home next weekend so we are going to have to move her downstairs which she really doesn’t want.
