To think that this is the key to "success"?

So I have come to make a link between all of the ppl I know who have the following
-Investments/properties
-Time/money for Travel
-mortgage free
And the IMPORTANT ONE
-Working part time/own their business/choose their own hours etc so way more freedom and time with their kids/no childcare

They all left after university and lived/earned abroad for approximately 6-8 years, clearly made a shit load of money.

There's a lot of ppl around me in this situation! Has anyone else noticed this??

Dunno.
Engineers can make a lot working abroad, TEFL teachers less so.

LemonViolet · 31/07/2021 12:57

I think you have a very narrow definition of success, OP.

moaningmyrtleturtle · 31/07/2021 12:58

Yea the ppl I know have a range of backgrounds
Engineering
Electricians
Teachers
Nurses
Marketing
Plumbers
Hotel management
Other jobs where they work remotely

@LemonViolet I see success as being able to live your life without being held down as such. Answering to yourself and spending it as you like with those you love. But yeah that's just me.

Comparison is the theft of joy, OP. If you're not happy with your life then make a plan to change things, only you can do this.

Sitting around thinking why is everyone else more successful than me won't make that happen.

moaningmyrtleturtle · 31/07/2021 13:03

@youdoyoutoday I never said I wasn't happy with my lot Hmm

‘There is no ‘key’ to success- some people will have more opportunities than others, be in the right place at the right time and then set long term goals.

Some lifestyles can look perfect from the outside looking in, but it’s not necessarily the case.

IMHO ‘success’ is all relative.

For some people it could be getting a full time job and being able to apply for a mortgage, never mind pay it off early.

For others it could be having a career they enjoy or raising a family, not necessarily being able to choose their own hours.

Balls. I reckon some of them got inheritance. Whether they admit to it or not.

I tick all those boxes, I'm a nurse and it's purely down to inheritance.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 31/07/2021 13:06

I don’t know if I count - I haven’t “got it made”, but I do work for myself and have lots of flexibility, and I’ve travelled a decent amount. I know a lot of people who do then same, and a decent amount who make eye watering amounts of money and often have multiple homes…

No working abroad for many years though. Just hard work and resilience, and the skills to make it work - both in terms of being good at whatever they do; and being able to sell that, and keeping going when it’s hard.

Really? Because your OP lists criteria for success that are entirely about having lots of money.

I’m not sure “success” really exists as an objective thing, but I would definitely put finding happiness, peace and contentment in life, however that looks or feels for you as an individual, way over and above having lots of money.

catfunk · 31/07/2021 13:13

No generational wealth/ gifted deposits involved at all........ ?

catfunk · 31/07/2021 13:15

Also , I have friends who have investment properties, work PT, run own business and they'e fucking miserable and in terrible relationships and some even have substance abuse problems. I feel I'm much more 'succesfull' with my modest life, health and happiness.

moaningmyrtleturtle · 31/07/2021 13:22

@catfunk no none. All the parents had very average jobs too and sahms for most too. And I'm thinking inheritance would have been not likely as the ones I know of have large families (parents are usually one of 4/5 or more so any money inherited would be split between a lot of family) I live in a fairly small town where everyone know everyone. Ppl of my generation tend to go off, make money and come home to settle with their family.
