To leave on time?

Name change in case anything is outing!

I started a new part-time job in a shop two months ago. It's mostly great as it fits around my kids. The shop is open 9-5:30. If my shift finishes at 1, then there's no issue leaving on time. However, when I'm supposed to finish at 5:30, I end up being there until around 6 . The thing is, I'm only paid until 5:30, and it seems expected that we stay on. I wouldn't mind staying on to help sometimes but when they're expecting another half hour of work every time... it just doesn't sit right with me.

Has anyone else experienced this and if so, what did you do?

I would tell my boss that they either pay you until 6, or you're leaving at 5:30.

RealBecca · 30/07/2021 19:00

I used to stay but i was a teenager. They also expected me to come in for meetings on non-working days...shit employer.

Now i wouldn't. I would say what youve said and state your expectation of pay, otherwise id hand in my notice and leave on the dot.

RealBecca · 30/07/2021 19:02

When i said i stayed because i was a teenager i meant because i didn't realise there were better employers and was scared to stand my ground

When I worked in a small shop we were paid for 15 minutes past closing time and were able to go at that time.

ShadowInVain · 30/07/2021 19:07

Are you on min wage? If so, this may be illegal as it will take your hourly rate below the min wage.

hopeishere · 30/07/2021 19:12

What happens at 5.30-6? Is it tidying up etc? Brazen it out and just leave.

MadeOfStarStuff · 30/07/2021 19:19

If they want you to work til 6 they need to pay you til 6.

Being asked to stay occassionally isn’t in itself unreasonable but they should pay you and it shouldn’t be all the time, if it is they need to extend the shift time.

Sunshineaftermorningrain · 30/07/2021 19:22

I hate this, it happens with care staff as well and it amounts to hundreds of unpaid hours.

plodalong12 · 30/07/2021 19:25

Not sure if you work 5 days a week but if you do that’s 2 and a half hours per week they’re getting out of you without paying you. If I asked you to come round to my house one day a week to do odd jobs for 2 and a half hours on the agreement I was not going to give you a penny for your time, would you do it?

FunMcCool · 30/07/2021 19:27

Have you spoken to them about it?

kowari · 30/07/2021 19:27

What would happen if you just left at 17:30 and stated childcare or other reasons and that you took the job based on the shift times?

WestendVBroadway · 30/07/2021 19:28

Perhaps you should start coming into work late. If this is questioned just say it is the 20 minutes you owe me from yesterday.

LawnFever · 30/07/2021 19:29

I’d just remind them you’re only paid until 5.30 but will stay until 6 if they pay you

DrManhattan · 30/07/2021 19:31

Leave or ask to be paid until six

HummingBeeBox · 30/07/2021 19:32

Center Parcs do this. You don't get paid as a housekeeper until you reach your lodge so all that collecting products and cycling isn't paid. Nor is the time cycling back from your lodge and putting the cloths and products back. It's disgraceful as I worked 20 minutes at least extra every day... times 600 housekeepers at each park. Disgusting.

HummingBeeBox · 30/07/2021 19:36

Sorry, my point was, it's not on. Is it Primark? This happens to my sister all the time

Crunchymum · 30/07/2021 19:43

I used to work in DP back in the day and if you did the close shift (until 8pm) it was standard that you wouldn't leave until 8.30pm. The rota always had people in as equally as possible for close shift buy some people would do more than others.

I'd work 5/6 days per week during Uni holidays and I'd expect 2 close shifts. When I was doing my usual part-time hours of 3 days per week it was 1 close shift a week.

CarryOn1 · 30/07/2021 19:44

Do they pay for a break during the day that they don't technically have to pay you for?
My old workplace forced us to have a useless 15min tea break (never able to actually sit down in peace for 15) and somehow that meant we had to arrive 15+mins early every day to set up.

BlueSurfer · 30/07/2021 19:46

What do you need to do between 5:30 and 6? If it’s cleaning and cashing up, can you just do it between 5 and 5:30 and leave anything else for whoever opens up to do?

Planty13 · 30/07/2021 19:49

Just leave. Unfortunately it’s the people that stay that have employers thinking they can get away with It. It’s cheeky AF.
