Aibu that if you ask someone to call around 6pm

Would you expect someone to call perhaps around 5.45 to 6.15 if you asked them to call around 6? It's a call from a trades person so would I be wrong in assuming they don't want the job and are avoiding me?

If I were in a trade that would mean from about 6-7ish or possibly a bit later if I was busy
I wouldn't call before six

Janaih · 29/07/2021 18:56

If its a tradesperson I'd allow a couple of days either side.

AnyOldLion · 29/07/2021 18:57

If it's a tradesman I'd expect them to turn up at your house at some random inconvenient time to do the work without confirming with you first.

Expect them either never, or at 7.30am on a random Wednesday morning.

girlmom21 · 29/07/2021 19:04

If it's a tradesperson id expect somewhere between 5 & 9pm to be honest. They might not get off til 6pm then want to see their kids before bed and have some tea. They're only human.

MattyGroves · 29/07/2021 19:06

I have never had a tradesman call. We have to call them.

You say you have asked them to call then, not if they agreed to it, so not sure i would expect a call.

OneToThree · 29/07/2021 19:08

15 minutes either side is wildly optimistic.

Lindy2 · 29/07/2021 19:24

I work for a plumber. If he says 6pm it actually translates to roughly anytime between 5pm and 7pm.

He doesn't do it on purpose. It's just impossible to know exactly when he can do it. He obviously won't leave previous jobs incomplete because they are taking longer than expected which then makes him late for other appointments.

😂 At the 2 days either side. That's pretty realistic too sometimes, although he employs me now to organise things and limit the number of surprise visits!

BackforGood · 29/07/2021 19:30

I agree with most.

Also if you'd asked them to doesn't necessarily = "they have agreed to" call you at that time ?

kowari · 29/07/2021 19:32

5:55 to 6:30, maybe a bit later, they could be in the middle of a job. I wouldn't expect a call much before 6 as you might still be driving home or something.

Monkeymilkshake · 29/07/2021 19:33

I think you’d be lucky to get a call regardless of the time!

user1499291455 · 29/07/2021 19:40

This was following no call the previous day when requested. I guess I'll have to find a few other people to get quotes from.

Aaarggghh apologies for the drip feed. I asked for a call yesterday and had no success though they did message to say they would call that evening.i suggested a call today around 6 which they said would be no problem.

I think you need to give a 'from' time, not an 'at' time. The last time I was called by a tradesperson was at 9:30pm. They may be finishing a late job at 6pm, or home with their family, playing with their children, having dinner, putting children to bed, then making phone calls for work.

But this is true of every single person in the world. We all need to have a life and get some rest etc. We all have jobs and families to juggle. Thing is though, if it gets to the time when I said I'd call and I am still busy on another job or I need to go home, I message the person who's expecting me and I say 'sorry, something's come up. I'll call tomorrow morning'. I don't just ghost someone.

Most people in most jobs seem to manage to let people know if they can't do something, or they're going to be late. Why can't most tradespeople do it? A couple of days ago somebody posted on here that expecting tradespeople to turn up is because some people think they are servants. No! Of course tradespeople aren't servants. They are small business people. So why do so many of then act like 14 year old kids being asked to do their homework?

toocold54 · 29/07/2021 19:56

I’d probably think you meant from 6pm (as that’s when you get in from work) else you would have said between 6-7pm.

AnyOldLion · 29/07/2021 20:07

I find that if you contact 10 tradesmen you'll be lucky to hear back from 2 or 3.

Yesitsbess · 29/07/2021 21:18

I'm a tradesperson who sometimes doesn't have any signal (am often in a hedge on a big estate) or something has gone horribly wrong that day and I'm spinning eleventy hundred plates. A lot of us (tree surgeons, gardeners, plumbers and builders to name a few) have had our entire schedules thrown out of whack by the mad weather this season, it's not so much organising a timetable at the moment, more like air traffic control.

I hope you get your job done soon though.
