They have access to these accounts or they literally just have your phone number snd email address?

If the latter, no they can’t do anything with those. But change your passwords to be safe and take all the standard precautions to ensure they don’t get access to your other info (DOB, postcode etc)

What sort of fraud do these fraudsters commit?

Hont1986 · 29/07/2021 13:21

Not really. In theory they could spoof your email address and phone number and contact people you know, and they might think it was you. But to do that they would need to know your contacts.

If they have your email password as well then it's very different, they can get into all your online accounts then.

Panickingpavlova · 29/07/2021 13:37

No I filled in a form and just put these details in, I realise it wasn't right t beforehand going further!
Dh said they may be able to get a sim with my ml?

I suspect hundreds of people have my email address and phone number, including people who are fraudulent. Every 'Nigerian prince' or 'Microsoft engineer' knows these details about me.

What do you mean exactly and how do you know (particular) fraudsters have these?

chunderwunder · 29/07/2021 13:40

What's an ml?

HollowTalk · 29/07/2021 13:43

Well phone numbers used to be publicly available in a phone book - what could anyone do with that? Same with an email address - you must have written to tons of people over the years and they've all got your email address.

The question is do they have access to your email a/c via your password?

Do you know who these people are?

chunderwunder · 29/07/2021 13:44

They can't do anything with your email account because these are unique. If they used it any information/verification etc. would come to you, not them. I guess they could spoof it, ie. pretend a mail came from you but what's the point unless you're a bonafide institution that someone would want to impersonate, like a bank or company.

Same with your phone number really.

Make sure your email password is really strong though and check to see if you have any extra or suspicious sign ins.

Boom45 · 29/07/2021 13:47

Just your phone number and email address? Or access to your phone and email? If they've just got your number the worst they can do is send you spam. If they have other information too (date of birth, passwords, etc) then I'd inform you bank and phone company and they'll set up extra security for you.
My bank account was drained when some scum bag stole my identity but they had access to A LOT more info than just my phone number. It's a right pain doing anything with my bank account now but its a lot more secure.

WhatTheFoot · 29/07/2021 13:53

@Boom45 do you know how they got your information? I'm asking because a similar thing happened to me and I don't know how, I'm so careful, I think it was some kind of data breach? Just wondered if you knew how it happened to you.

Acrasia · 29/07/2021 14:02

I think this might be what your DH is thinking of. I don’t think they would have enough information with what you’ve given them, but it’s worth a read for everyone tbh www.which.co.uk/news/2020/04/sim-swap-fraud-how-criminals-hijack-your-number-to-get-into-your-bank-accounts/

Panickingpavlova · 29/07/2021 14:07

@WhatTheFoot I'm not 100% sure where they got my details but possibly the data breach at Sony (I had a PlayStation account!). They managed to get a new sim and get access to my phone so they could change the passwords on my Internet banking. We got the money back from the bank thankfully - the change of password following the emptying of my joint account, savings account and 2 accounts for my children should have been stopped by them - but it was a nightmare. If you are worried about a data breach please inform your bank so they can add extra security

WhatTheFoot · 29/07/2021 14:21

@Boom45 wow what a nightmare, they're bastards aren't they 😡. I have additional security on my bank account and to be fair the bank were shit hot in terms of notifying me that someone was trying to access my account. The whole thing really affected me in terms of my mental health, it's one of those things that you don't realise the impact until it happens to you. I think I'll always be worried about something else happening.
