Balloon company won’t sell me a balloon to release

Gonewiththegin · 29/07/2021 11:48

Just as the title suggests. I regularly use the same balloon company and had asked them to do a memorial balloon. They replied they do not sell balloons to be released. AIBU to think they have no say what I do with said balloon once I’ve paid £30 to have it made.

Is there perhaps a different way you could mark the memorial? Lighting a candle or planting something maybe?

LadyPenelope68 · 29/07/2021 11:53

How fantastic to see a company behaving ethically. Don’t be such a selfish, irresponsible individual - releasing balloons can cause huge issues for wildlife.

Shamoo · 29/07/2021 11:54

Assume this isn’t a genuine post, but in case it is. YABVVVVVVVVVVVU.

Hercisback · 29/07/2021 11:54

Great to see. What company is this? Glad there are some out there with ethics.

There are plenty of other ways to commemorate someone's life without using balloons.

VapeVamp12 · 29/07/2021 11:54

Good!
When I walk my dog I occasionally find these "released balloons" in the woods. One I found had a dead hedgehog in it. also a note from a 7 year old saying she wanted to see how her balloon travelled. Don't know how far it travelled but it killed a hedgehog!!

Jackgrealishscurtains · 29/07/2021 11:55

Is this a reverse/talking about someone else?

RubyGoat · 29/07/2021 11:55

How about you plant a tree or sponsor an animal in a wildlife reserve instead?

Peaplant20 · 29/07/2021 11:56

Please don’t release balloons :( it’s so bad for the environment and the company that makes them rightly feel they have a responsibility not to harm the environment

NailsNeedDoing · 29/07/2021 11:56

It’s great that companies are starting to take responsibility for this, good on them. I wish more would do the same, balloon releases should be made illegal.

Chikapu · 29/07/2021 11:56

Good for them. How exactly does releasing a balloon memorialise anyone?

Babdoc · 29/07/2021 11:57

There are lots of nicer and less environmentally damaging memorials, OP.
Why not plant a rose bush, donate to charity, sponsor a park bench, or think of something appropriate to the particular person?
I am sorry if you feel everyone has been having a go at you - I’m sure the PPs do sympathise with your bereavement, they are just concerned to protect wildlife too.
Have a nice cup of tea and think of a lovely idea of your own for a memorial.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 29/07/2021 11:57

Sorry for your loss but don't release balloons into the air.

DowntonCrabby · 29/07/2021 11:58

It’s so dangerous.

For £30 buy a rose bush to plant and remember your loved one, buy a star or have a memorial candle made you can ligh each year/ocassion.

It’s absolutely right that they are refusing this request but still many ways to commemorate your loved one. Flowers

CakeandGo · 29/07/2021 11:58

Totally with you OP.
The floating fire lantern company wouldn’t make me one to let off over a dry forest. Fuckers.

chunderwunder · 29/07/2021 11:58

Are people really this clueless?

CousinKrispy · 29/07/2021 11:58

I'm very sorry for your loss, OP. It's lovely that you want to do something to memorialize your loved one, these rituals and gestures are important.

As others have pointed out, releasing a balloon is simply littering and therefore not appropriate. Fortunately there are lots of other ways to memorialize someone, especially if you're saving £30 on a balloon. Is this something you planned to do on your own, or with a group of other people?

Gonewiththegin · 29/07/2021 11:58

Not a goading post at all, I genuinely had no idea why they refused 😳 I shamefully hadn’t thought about it thoroughly. Thanks for enlightening me.

Any ideas of anything else we could do? It was for my little one to send up to heaven for their relative and they will be terribly disappointed due to my ignorance.

OP posts:
PattyPan · 29/07/2021 11:59

Yabu, maybe do something like plant a tree in memorial instead of destroying the environment!

DinosaurDiana · 29/07/2021 11:59

Good. Well done that company.

PotteringAlong · 29/07/2021 11:59

Just send a kiss up. It will mean the same, cost less and isn’t ethically dubious!

MrsTophamHat · 29/07/2021 11:59

I would definitely plant something.

Terhou · 29/07/2021 12:00

Good. If anyone wanted to release a memorial balloon for me after I snuff it, I'd come back to haunt them.

Zenithbear · 29/07/2021 12:00

Heartening to read all the replies showing that most people realise what a despicable idea releasing balloons is.
Agree with goady comment.
Do people really get that bored?

Gallowayan · 29/07/2021 12:01

You haven't thought this through.

Ted27 · 29/07/2021 12:01

Blow bubbles, will be fun for them as well if they are little
