To remind you that dog poo can cause blindness?

UnlimitedChipsAndSalsa · 29/07/2021 07:42

Around 100 people (mostly children) a year in the UK experience vision loss because of exposure to dog poo. Clean up after your dog every time.

YABU - I already knew about dog poo and blindness.
YANBU - This is new information to me.

Thanks for voting. I'm really curious to know whether this is common knowledge.

Also, keep your dog out of "no dogs" parks! (Pretty much just a rant from here, so feel free to skip this part Smile.) I'm also so tired of seeing entitled dogs owners bringing their dogs into "no dogs" parks, which are set up (in part) to reduce children's exposure to harmful faeces.

PREDICTABLE EXCUSES:
PE#1: "But I clean up after my dog."
Not 100% you don't. There's no way you would rub your hand in the place you just cleaned up and then stick it in your mouth. That's what kids do, and that's why there are a few but some areas that do not allow dogs.

PE#2: But I worm my dog regularly."
The reason it has to be redone is because dogs pick up roundworms again, so it's not 100% effective.

PE#3: "But I'm just passing through."
Passing through the "no dogs" park is being IN the park. And dog faeces aside, there are other reasons why people might go specifically to a "no dogs" parks (severe allergy, fear of dogs, etc.).

PE#4: "What about cats/foxes?"
We're talking about dogs here.

PE#5: "What about service animals?"
Service animals are allowed to go anywhere the owner goes, so obviously I'm not talking about those.

Ooh. I like the idea of putting newspaper down.

Katedanielshasakitty · 29/07/2021 16:52

I would wish for that too, being someone who regularly removes cat faeces from my flowerbed.

@UnlimitedChipsAndSalsa so you have to regularly remove cat shit yourself. From your own garden. But, this thread is aimed at dog owners. If you are so concerned about the risks of blindness, surely the thread should be pointing the danger of both dog AND cat shit.

Seems odd that you think the risk comes mainly from dogs. When the evidence doesn't prove that.

I knew this but I think it’s irrelevant if other people didn’t as everyone knows dog poo is dirty and carries germs so even if it didn’t cause blindness I still wouldn’t be advising kids to play with it.

HamsterHelp · 29/07/2021 17:01

I must admit, anecdotally, around here it’s the OAP dog owners who don’t pick up. You see the younger ones picking up but the older ones don’t. But we live in a suburb with quite an elderly population so maybe that’s why.

@KarmaStar

Ffs!!always people moaning constantly about dogs on mn. It's not dogs that are causing climate change It's not dogs that deal drugs. Dogs don't shoot or stab Dogs don't want money or power Dogs have, and do work hard for humans, protecting, guiding, helping, bringing joy, friendship and love into the world. Leave dogs alone!! They don't have flush toilets.Think back to human sewage that used to run down the street causing illness and death..The poo is picked up as best as possible. Give me a dog over a whining entitled human any day.🐶🐕🐩🐺🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
This!!! 1000% It's the humans that are the selfish ones not the dogs!

Doggy nappies, someone invent them quick! Place used dog nappy in nappy bag, scented of course and bin it where the bin is, not in a hedge or tree. No more smears....
Horses have poo collectors strapped to their backsides, why not dogs.

They already exist. And there would be no way in gods name I'd put my dog in a nappy. There are already way too many nappies in the world. Let's not add more.

I used to ride and live rurally. I have never seen a horse wearing a poo collector.

What? No they don't 😆

That’s definitely not true. I live pretty much rural and none of the horses round here have them!
Flowerlane · 29/07/2021 17:44

Also the poo collector for dogs is us humans with our little bags! Grin

veeeeh · 29/07/2021 17:58

When I was on holiday in Kerry, the Killarney jaunting car drivers were obliged by Council to have poo collectors on their horses.
I love the smell of horse manure, not...

Anyway, I believe you all, horse nappies are not de rigeur but they do exist! Post intended to be a bit lighthearted really.....

As a dog owner I agree that owners should pick up after their dogs and shouldn't go in places where restrictions are such as kids play areas.

However, I think this aggression towards dog owners is disgusting and is leading to severe issues which are dangerous and terrifying. I'd like something to be done about the violent way anti-dog people behave towards dog people. They need to be arrested and dealt with severely.

Last year when my dog was in the middle of a poo some men drove up from behind me so couldn't see the front of me and that I had a bag already over my hand and was waiting for my dog to finish his poo). They pulled up their car said why the fuck aren't you picking his poo up you fat bitch. I turned, shocked and showed them the bag on my hand and said what the fuck do you think this is for. They carried on asking why I wasn't doing it already and were getting more abusive to which I told them to dog hadn't finished and some twats were shouting at me. They then drove off, turned the car around and then drove at speed towards me and my dog before slamming the breaks on cm away from us.

Yes poo collectors for carriage horses in certain public areas do exist. But not for riding horses which are the norm here in the Uk

User57327259 · 29/07/2021 18:27

@Flowerlane I cant speak for other cat owners but all my family who have cats have indoor cats and litter boxes
@LST take the dog for a walk if you want but make sure it does it's poops in your garden and not on public areas

Nah I shall carry on as I have done for the 9 years I have had him.

AllTheSingleLadiess · 29/07/2021 18:35

I didn't read the whole thread but you forgot to add that hanging a doggie bag with dogshit is not picking up after a dog. It needs to be binned

AllTheSingleLadiess · 29/07/2021 18:36

Next time don't forget to add horses to your excuse part 😉

sundaydisposition · 29/07/2021 20:13

Where I live we don't have dog poo on the streets, but we do have cat poo all over the place because my idiot neighbours want a cat to brag about, but not actually care for. Anyway, the thing that annoys me though is the grown ass men who feel the need to pee everywhere! The entire street stinks. Next time you do this thread, add men who think the entire world is their toilet to your excuses please.

@Drivingmeupthewall

So, it's your own private woodland and you're the only human walking there? hmm

It’s buried. Into the ground. Exactly how much risk does that pose do you think? If a child comes to the woods, armed with a shovel, and just so happens to dig where my dog’s poo has been buried…well, that’s an unlikely and unfortunate situation.

In those circumstances though, no I will not bag it up in plastic, preserve it forever, carry it about and then place it in a bin, or drive it home, as that just increases the risk of contamination for lots of other humans.

Don’t be obtuse and dare I say it, just a little bit precious. No one is saying it’s a health food….

My point was that the woodland is a "human area" if it's for public use. And the faeces may break down within a few days, but the parasites are still active for much longer after that. BUT it does sound like you are taking responsible measures to nearly eliminate the contact people could have with your dog's poo, and it does reduce unnecessary plastic waste, so I (somewhat) stand corrected there.

But you're wrong about one thing...I am saying it's a health food. Follow me for more recipes! Grin
