Wanted to get people's opinions on if AIBU?

New neighbours next door, both of us have a bungalow.
They were there around 3 months and bought a small dog which they are entitled to do. After another 3 months they bought another dog as she told me they are keen to breed them.
Up to them.
My AIBU is that one of the dogs in particular barks most of the day and evening. It's only a small dog so has a little yappy bark.
I have a dog too who is 12 and I let mine out for a wee in the morning then as soon as he barks I let him back in the house. On hot days I leave the back door open so he comes and goes as he pleases.

Their dog seems to bark and bark to come in but they don't let it in. The other day I saw them going out in the car and they left the dogs in the back garden whilst they were out so the dogs were barking from lunchtime until 8pm constantly. In the end I had to close my back door as the constant noise was really grating on me.

They have a child and her bedroom is at the front of the house, my small daughters bedroom is at the back of my house (closer to the garden) as it's a bigger room and I have 2 girls in there sharing. Last night I tried to put my daughter to bed but the dog was barking constantly from 8-10pm at night.

I didn't know what to do. The dog isn't barking after 11pm which is when the curfew is but I still think it's a bit much to be barking from 8-10pm. She couldn't sleep with that.
Would you knock and say something? They have lived next door around 8 months.

For context my dog only barks if someone knocks at the front door, not barking all day long.

Anyone?

Yes absolutely say something! The fact that you have your own dog who is well trained/cared for and not a pain in the arse strengthens your position.

Tell them it's not on to leave dogs to bark incessantly for hours!

Why wouldn't you speak up?!

Greenbks · 28/07/2021 22:01

Talk to them and if they don’t take action then you can complain to the council under dogs barking a lot kr something. Like it

I've lived here about 13 years and before they moved in I had an elderly gentleman next door who didn't make a sound.
So I thought to myself AIBU about the noise because I was used to someone who made no noise.
I don't want to fall out with them as they've not long moved in really.
Also I normally work so I guess I don't notice the noise as much but as it's the 6 weeks holidays im off now until September and the constant barking is really getting to me.

If the dog is barking for more than 10-15 mins, go and knock their door .... smile, sorry to bother you but just wondering if your dog is Ok? He’s been barking for a while and sounds distressed ...
If they are out, then let them know when they get back. Assume they don’t realise that it barks continuously whilst they are out ..,
We’ve had this with our neighbours. They are genuinely nice people but are just a bit clueless. Things have improved somewhat since I bit the bullet and started letting them know, but in a ‘concerned’ rather than complaining way.

Child or no child - I'd be climbing the wall if I lived next to a yapping dog that long (at all in fact)

MondeoFan · 28/07/2021 22:10

@Candlesinthewind that sounds good. Some good ideas there.

@StoneofDestiny I know.
It wasn't that warm here yesterday so I could decide whether to have the back door open or not, but after an hour I couldn't stand it no more, I had to close the back door to try and muffle the barking and turn the tv up.

My dog doesn't bark when their dog barks which I think is weird. I think it's because he knows it's only a very small dog and probably doesn't feel threatened by it at all. Part of me wishes my dog would bark then they'd get fed up with it and call it indoors

You can make a noise complaint, but best to try and address it directly with them first.

I would tell them. There isnt a noise curfew. Any loud or unnecessary noise at any time is considered a nuisance.

Years ago my friend was told that if her dogs barked more than twice it was a nuisance.
