To allow my kids to scooter in the shared flats driveway

12 flats, one shared driveway, electric gate at the end onto the main road. Cars parked on one side of the driveway.

Is it unreasonable to allow my kids to use this driveway to scooter about 30 min a day? It means they are scootering passed someone’s lounge and kitchen and another flats bedroom. It’s usually around 5pm.

One neighbour ( penthouse) isn’t impressed.

Sorry, but this would drive me nuts. Take them to the park.

starpatch · 28/07/2021 19:48

I would totally allow my child to do this. I assume you don't have much outdoor space, this is an important freedom for him.

KittenKong · 28/07/2021 19:49

How old are the kids and are cars moving on the driveway?

FionnulaTheCooler · 28/07/2021 19:50

People might get funny about the possibility of a scooter scratching their car, also the noise.

Wanandwan · 28/07/2021 19:51

I’d be worried about them scratching a car or getting knocked down

CrouchEndTiger12 · 28/07/2021 19:51

I live in a house and the children scooter and cycle up and down the pavement outside. No difference

Do they expect dead silence?

LST · 28/07/2021 19:52

I let my kids play in the street with next door and next door but one so surely this is the same?

Where else have they got to play? Lol at the poster just suggesting 'take them to the park'.. like it's that easy for everyone.

Chloemol · 28/07/2021 19:52

Yes it is unreasonable. Scooters make noise, why should someone have to suffer that? What happens if they lose control and damage a car?

Find some open space for them

QueenofDestruction · 28/07/2021 19:52

No, not if there are cars parked there. It could easily cause damage to the cars.

girlmom21 · 28/07/2021 19:52

As long as they're not playing too close to cars or people's windows there's no issue.

User5827372728 · 28/07/2021 19:53

They are very very active kids, and on non working days we are out at the park or wherever for at least 5 hours a day. Sometimes we get home and it’s a bit early for tea so I let them scooter to burn off the excess energy. They are 3&5. Not much movements on the cars really, they tend to either be parked and stay there, so far they’ve never hit a car! They also don’t shout or make loud noises other than scootering!

CatsArePeople · 28/07/2021 19:54

yes. totally do.

StarryStarrySocks · 28/07/2021 19:54

I wouldn't have an issue with this. I could understand if the people whose windows they were scootering past were a bit annoyed but the neighbour in the penthouse can jog on!

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 28/07/2021 19:54

I wouldn't. It's for cars to park, not kids to play. If one of the cars gets scratched, you've no way of knowing whether your DC caused it and if they didn't, they'd get blamed anyway. And I'd worry about a car reversing and not seeing them.
Plus it's not nice for people to have kids looking into their bedroom windows - the spaces were designed for people to not really linger there.

HundredMilesAnHour · 28/07/2021 19:55

So you won't be upset if they knocked down by a car? And you'll pay the costs if they damage someone's car? If your answer is yes to both then sure go ahead.

User5827372728 · 28/07/2021 19:58

Well at 5pm no one is usually in their bedroom!

Obviously I don’t want my kids to get run over, and I’m outside supervising the whole time. There’s about 7 cars parked along the side, and it’s very obvious if a car is about to move or drive into the block.

A bit dramatic really... It's a really quiet car park and they don't play by the cars so the risks are slim. Slimmer than a child playing outside on the path by their house, realistically.
Ivyscarlet86 · 28/07/2021 19:59

Are you outside with them?? Surely they’re not on their own out there

PamTheSpam · 28/07/2021 19:59

I wouldn't like it, it's a private car park by the sound of it. If that's the case you are all paying a premium to keep your vehicles safe, not to have kids play in it

User5827372728 · 28/07/2021 20:00

@Ivyscarlet86

I’m always out there with them

OP posts:
WallaceinAnderland · 28/07/2021 20:00

Are you supervising when they are out there OP?

DingDongDenny · 28/07/2021 20:00

If you are out there with them then isn't there a park nearby you could take them to instead

WallaceinAnderland · 28/07/2021 20:01

Ah cross post

User5827372728 · 28/07/2021 20:02

I try and do it so get home form somewhere, put something in the oven for tea, then kill 30 min outside burning energy before going into a 2 bed flat.

Car parks are not children's playgrounds. Terrible idea
