Mooncup stuck please please help

Used a moon cup for the first time and can not get it out. I can feel the stem and part of the side of the cup (it’s sort of a bit sideways?) but it’s really high up- I can touch it with the tip of my middle finger. How am I supposed to grip it and pull it out. I’ve read a few articles and none of the tips- change position etc help. I can’t reach up there with forefinger and thumb. I was very late to show with my pregnancies and someone said it was because my cervix faced a certain way (backwards I think) could it be that? Please please help. I’m having visions of my partner, barbecue tongs and a plastic sheet. It’s a brand called hey girls in the large size. (I should have stuck to my rule and not trusted anyone who calls a woman a girl…). But please help, posting in aibu for traffic because I’ve been squatting in the bath for half an hour now and am having a mini panic but if you want a question how’s this: maybe tell customers clearly on the packet it might be impossible to get the mooncup out. AIBU

Glad you sorted it. I’ve been there too, also with tilted cervix. The whole thing just disappeared like my insides sucked it up. Couldn’t even feel the tail bit, totally freaked me out. After much faffing and bearing down so much I think I’ve had piles ever since, I eventually got it out and put it straight in the bin! Never again.

isthismylifenow · 28/07/2021 21:01

I had a similar experience, and I also have a titled cervix. I eventually got it out, newly reduced to tears. But the corker was that I thought I had done something wrong and inserted it again whilst in the shower. Well clearly I have a very strong vaso reflex as when it popped, I just managed to get the shower door open and then I passed out. And then when I came around, I had to get the bastard thing out again. I have realised that they suit some people, but definately not all. Of course it's become a bit of a standing or rather falling over joke now 🙈

Mine went in the bin.

Blankspace4 · 28/07/2021 21:03

There’s not a 24 hour supermarket within an hours drive from wherever you are? I wouldn’t go without sanpro!

Funkmaster · 28/07/2021 21:04

Bathroom was like a Quentin Tarantino film first time i used mine. Have got to grips with it now after a year and mastered a slightly more refined and cleaner removal.

Prisonbreak · 28/07/2021 21:09

I’m so sorry but you have given me such a laugh. Glad it’s out but thanks for the giggle

Three0fivepointfour · 28/07/2021 21:14

Take it out in the shower. Easier on the cleaning. I also get a hit from pretending to be in Psycho...

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 28/07/2021 21:19

Well done! I was coached on the phone for an hour by a very good friend. I really struggled to get the hang of it with the whole of my first period. Second period it worked a charm. I always use a scissor motion to get it out.

GladAllOver · 28/07/2021 21:31

It's a shame if you have to give up, the mooncup saves a fortune over the years.
The first few times I practised in the shower.

bumblebeebanana · 28/07/2021 21:40

little hat for a dildo 😂😂 love that. i got mine stuck the first time i tried it, nearly went to a&e until dp eventually insisted to give it a go. we’d only been together a few months, never quite imagined i’d have him digging around for a mooncup so soon. he sang the lion king song to me while doing it to try to distract me 😂😂 never again

badacorn · 28/07/2021 21:41

I had a similar experience too, I think I inserted it too high in the first place. Very painful to remove, i think it was sucking my cervix down with it. I’ll never use it again because I kept getting horrible thrush whenever I used it.

Ticketybooboo · 28/07/2021 21:47

Happened to me the first, and also the last time as was too petrified to try again, and I totally understand the panic. Hope you get the sucker.

Northernlurker · 28/07/2021 21:51

You really need a waterproof layer under that flannel. Plastic bag? Cling film? I would go pants, plastic, flannel.

ItsAllBlahBlahBlah · 28/07/2021 21:56

Wow. Fair to say I won't be buying a moon cup after this thread 😂

So glad you are OK OP

Franklyfrost · 28/07/2021 22:01

@bumblebeebanana you were sung the lion king song while your dp took your mooncup out? That is the best. Can you feel the love tonight? Is that the lion king? Or hakuna matata?

Thanks for the pointers about what to do with no sanitary products. This is weird, but it may be relevant to my moon cup odyssey and I’m only learnt it was weird on mumsnet when someone posted about their dp being very funny for thinking that women bled when they went to the toilet when on their period. Look away if you’re squeamish or don’t want tmi…
but 90% of my period blood I deliberately let go of when I use the toilet so I’ll be fine without much protection.

@Franklyfrost Sorry, I didn’t mean to imply that you were fat just that mine happened because I was. By the time I reached round my tummy I just couldn’t get my fingers up far enough - it gave me short arms. The good news is that it has only happened to me once in 15 years of mooncup usage.

FenceSplinters · 28/07/2021 22:32

Oh god this thread has made me think that I will definitely never try a moon cup. I’m glad you got it out, OP.

lotusbell · 28/07/2021 22:54

I love mine but had lots of stuck moments. Easier said than done but if you're stressing, you'll tense up. If I can't do it on first attempt, I go off and do something else to relax before trying again. If I've got time and I'm at home, I'll get in the shower to take it out. Usually squatting over a small jug to 'capture' the contents Grin. I once lost my grip on it on removal and spilt it on the (carpeted) toilet floor.
I find mine easier to remove if it's quite full but I'm still not always convinced I've got it in the correct position. Don't give up!

whaaaaaaat?!

WineIsMyMainVice · 28/07/2021 23:29

@Kimonolady

Ok, breathe. There’s no where for it to go, it can’t go past your cervix, there’s no way you can lose it. Similarly, it can’t be stuck forever. I had this the very first time I used a cup - then you start to get stressed and tense and it’s even harder! Maybe take 10, have a break, and then try again. What worked for me is: sitting on the toilet, very, very gently pull on the stem. You’re NOT trying to pull it out, just to work it down a bit. It shouldn’t hurt. Once it’s low enough that you can feel the sides of the cup (even if just a tiny bit), push in on the side with your finger. You’re trying to break the vacuum seal. I hope that helps!
Absolutely this. Very good advice.
ThinWomansBrain · 28/07/2021 23:36

got mine stuck the first time - but then used it successfully for about ten years,

ohthatbloodycat · 28/07/2021 23:40

Fucking hell, I will never get one of these.
So glad your ordeal is over, OP! ThanksWine

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 28/07/2021 23:46

@LatteLoverLovesLattes

As much as I liked the idea of a 'moon up I'm a fat T. rex. & I decided it was not a good idea for me to use them!

Glad you retrieved it. It'll probably get easier and it's probably better to try it when your period is a bit heavier.

I'm still laughing at 'fat T-Rex'

Very glad your mooncup was safely delivered, OP. Well done for staying calm!

EBearhug · 28/07/2021 23:52

I had one sort of fold in on itself just when first lockdown started, and I have short fingers, so I was thinking, can't call GP, can't go to A&E, I'll end up dying because of having to get someone else fish a mooncup out. Anyway, after some very careful manoeuvring with a pair of tweezers, I sorted it out.

But the rest of the time, it's been fine (and I use a Hey Girls large currently.) I think it's worth persevering - it probably did take me one period to really get used to it, but then I struggled a bit with tampons when I first used them, back in the last millennium. Leaks are much less likely than with tampons, and I am not disposing of tampons, either.
