To ask how long it took to be re housed once social services

Have nominated you for a house and it was accepted by the housing that they accept the nomination please?.
My children have a disabilities social worker to help get them the correct support. Not for any safe guarding issues!.

I just wondered how long it took from when they housing accepted the nomination please and what else to expect? Was it instant? I've been told it will be one offer only and my children will have to move schools but we will stay in the same borough so that's nice. I've just never heard of this before!
Thanks.

Interested in this as social services have suggested moving us, for different reasons. I don’t want to, for many many reasons, but would have considered it if we got a choice on what area we went to and what property. How did it work for you?

Theunamedcat · 28/07/2021 18:51

My friend had to go within four weeks from her old unsanitary house to her new housing association house they had her pack earlier but she negotiated a few extra weeks so she could arrange a man with a van

myrtleWilson · 28/07/2021 18:52

I would imagine it would depend on any particular needs in terms of house. So, if a family needed a three bedroom property with wet room and hoists throughout that would probably take longer than a SS assessment that says a family ordinary allocated to a two bedroom property should be allocated a three bedroom property. The former would be rarer & may need funding for an adaptation....

VanillaIce1 · 28/07/2021 22:18

Hi it would just be a 3 bedroom house no adaptions needed and it would need to be ground floor, it's quite rare round here to find a 3 bedroom to be above the ground floor but they've made requests I have a garden.

@CheersBoris I would go for it, I was a bit worried about moving schools but my children are so so young they'd be able to adapt to a new school but if we are staying in borough I maybe be able to stay at the old school anyway.

The timescale will depend on availability and demand (and luck) but when you get offered somewhere you will be expected to move almost instantly so you need to be prepared- money saved for a van, carpets etc, start decluttering and maybe packing some things you rarely use, and prepare the kids for the idea of moving.

MichelleScarn · 28/07/2021 22:39

Sorry are you asking how long they allow you to take to move or how long you'll wait for a property?

VanillaIce1 · 28/07/2021 23:32

@MichelleScarn Both really it won't take long to pack up we could do it in two days I reckon?

it could be a long wait as there will still be other people on the list/in the queue ahead of you

and again, its driven by availability, or lack of

Housing sept in your local borough have their own timescales. Children services just write supporting letter to evidence need & urgency to add to your housing case. 3 bed houses are generally in shortage in many areas - so I guess it'll take as long as it takes but you could start mentally packing and getting boxes ready so you can move quickly if an offer (or successful bid if you have to bid on properties) comes up. Housing may be able to give you a very rough timescales.

And there will always be times when you may be 'top of the list' and someone who is in greater need following assessment is rehoused before you. But you are making progress so hope you get something soon! Is it the level access or garden access that's the greater need?
MichelleScarn · 29/07/2021 06:46

If its garden access and it needs to be enclosed make sure that's something that can be done!

Amijustagrump · 29/07/2021 08:19

It took our old neighbour around 9 months, but no idea if thats quick or slow

VanillaIce1 · 29/07/2021 12:04

Thank you for all your advice I think I have the meeting next week so will find out more then. And I'll let everyone know

It's a 'how longs a piece of string' one I'm afraid. Given your circumstances I assume you'll have a high banding/grading which is good however it depends how many people are on the list in front of you and what properties are available.

If you're one offer only and you're down for all areas it shouldn't be too long (but again, this depends on turnaround times/availability where you are).
Hang tight and your provider will contact you once something suitable comes availableSmile
