To be amused by how absurdly shite the marble arch mound is

I mean honestly, it's just abysmal

I know it's not funny that 2 million pounds could have been put up much better use, but the sheer crapness of it is making me laugh

Which ‘artist’ was commissioned to create this? My money is on a cousin of Matt Hancock.

BarbaraofSeville · 28/07/2021 10:08

@Weebleweeble

Hope to goodness London paid for it and not U.K. taxpayers. Our roundabouts aren't really maintained these days - the odd flowery one - the rest weeds
The weedy ones are deliberately like that 'for the good of the bees'. Do keep up.

not at all coincidental that it's a good excuse to cut services and no-one seems to care that accidents have probably increased because the overgrown grass blocks traffic and especially cyclists from view.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 28/07/2021 10:17

It's got potential.

A few tweaks and it could be Thunderbirds Tracy Island.

Just needs some palm trees, ginormous secret doors from which assorted craft can emerge and a booming voice coming from the depths saying 'Prepare for blast off!'

Could become a cult hit.

Yuckyfinger · 28/07/2021 10:25

@OutwiththeOutCrowd

They should get some blue peter presenters in to sort it out!Grin

This is nothing to do with Sadiq Khan, it's the responsibility of Westminster Council, who built it in the expectation that it would make money for them. [/quote]
He is the mayor of London. Westminster is London so why couldn’t he stop this environmental nightmare and waste of money?

merrymouse · 28/07/2021 10:29

He can't if it isn't in his remit.

The Mayor of London has particular responsibilities - TFL, appointing a police commissioner - but he doesn't control local councils.

user16395699 · 28/07/2021 10:43

Temporary? I could almost understand if it was something where the vegetation would grow up over time into something non-hideous.

Handy exercise for the council concerned in showing how incredibly out of touch they are, though. Shock

See, that I might have paid to go and see. Grin

@proudboomer

Yes, Westminster is in London but Sadiq has no power over what they decide to spend their money on in this regard.

BoxHedge · 28/07/2021 11:04

Voted YABU because I thought it just hadn’t matured out yet, but that’s before I realised it is a) temporary and b) built at the corner of a green park. YANBU.

He has control of the money so he could slash their funding if he so wished. So stop wasting money and fucking up the environment with you plastic grass or I will financially penalise you.
He has in the past for a lot more money than this

No, this article refers to money that would have been contributed to a particular scheme by TFL. He does not have control of local council funding.

ViceLikeBlip · 28/07/2021 11:47

I wonder if this will make its way into one of those "mega embarrassing ways I screwed up really publicly at work" threads?

That would be bloody awesome.

I'd pay good money to see Lesley Judd dance on that.

Good point. Whoever it is, I'm guessing they went to Eton 🙄
SpindleWhorl · 28/07/2021 11:51

Deputy heads will roll

Proudboomer · 28/07/2021 11:52

Well ok I accept he has no control but where is his voice against this environmental fuck up?
It is a mound of plastic grass when he is trying to cut London’s use of single use plastic. He has a voice that carry’s a lot of clout. He uses that voice to preach for a greener London.
Why has he remained silent at not only the proposal stage but the actual building of the plastic hill?

Bryonyshcmyony · 28/07/2021 11:52

What is it??

tallduckandhandsome · 28/07/2021 11:53

Hmm, disappointing. Here is a better mound, in Greenford, West London.

To be amused by how absurdly shite the marble arch mound is
Proudboomer · 28/07/2021 11:54

A pile of plastic over some scaffolding.
Bryonyshcmyony · 28/07/2021 11:54

A Dutch architecture group did it

Doubt they went to Eton.

longwayoff · 28/07/2021 11:58

View? East - Oxford St. West - Bayswater Rd. North - Edgware Rd. South - Hyde Park. Which is 1. FREE and 2. LOVELY. All the rest can be seen from the top of a bus.

Youcunnyfunt · 28/07/2021 12:03

So, it will need a minimum of 138 people an hour (every single hour) from 6am-10pm, every single day, just to break even on the cost (as it's temporary).

sashagabadon · 28/07/2021 12:04

it is awful! but it's role was to attract shoppers to Oxford Street so it may still achieve that goal... I'll certainly be off there to take a look!

It is on a very unloved and ugly roundabout whose main purpose is to allow people to cross to the other side and where day drinkers basically hang out so it's not like it has replaced anything nicer.
But it does look silly with plastic grass and the occasional tree.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/07/2021 12:15

Ah. Perhaps it's a rookie error to commission a hill from the Dutch. Grin
