To think this is weird!?

Name changed for this...I don't know why.

I went round to a friend's for tea. A fairly new friend I might add. We met at a baby group. Anyway she invited us over for lunch (me and dd). As we are eating I saw the cutlery came from a wooden box on the sideboard. I was just making conversation and asked why is it in a box. She then said...it's a canteen...it's what the cutlery came in so I have just kept in there. It's easier than have it in the kitchen and it's silver so I don't want it scratched. Fair enough.(Maybe I'm common I have never heard of a canteen before) anyway
I looked at the name of the cutlery and it was called "Arthur price"

I know I'm being very nosy but I looked it up and the set costs over 2k!! Is it odd for someone to own such expensive cutlery when they live in a 3 bed terrace. I expected that out of mega rich ppl (excuse my ignorance) they have very average jobs etc

I'm don't want to come across as nosy etc but is that Normal? My cutlery cost about 20quid from tesco 🙈

@MySecretHistory
“Rubbish. I have an Arthur Price Canteen that was sub £100 about 15 years ago. They make all prices and ranges and their styles are the same from cheaper to more expensive may be silver or silver plated.”

  • Hence the expression “Cheap at ’Arf the Price”.

Back the truck up, I’ve got Arthur Price cutlery and it cost £50 from TK Maxx 👍👍

We have very expensive and extensive cutlery set that was passed down to us from in laws. It's used though we don't have space to store it and dh wanted it used as that's what it was made for.

Think I need to take a look at my vintage canteen of cutlery, it might be worth a small fortune.

It's not weird. It's just different to you.

Bet she’s still missing some of the teaspoons. They always disappear into a black hole, no matter how much you pay for them. 🤔

LadyCatStark · 29/07/2021 01:43

Maybe she got it ‘alf(ur) price 😂

We had a lovely canteen of cutlery as a wedding present - as it was from XH aunt. I left it with him (along with the pottery collection) and bought myself another set, although not in the canteen (not every day use though as it isn't dishwasher friendly)

I’ve got a lovely set of AP, I got it from John Lewis about 3 years ago it was about £100.
They have all different ranges, go on their website.

My late parents used a silver canteen of cutlery for everyday use. They got married in 1949 [it was a wedding gift] and I only ever remember using this cutlery when I lived at home. It used to be my job to clean it - eggs discoloured the tines of the forks! And it was always cleaned with silver polish before Christmas. I hated this job because of the intricate design on the handles where the silver polish used to gather and was hard to get out. [No Silver Dip back then!!!]

It was always washed by hand [no dishwashers] and was in use until they died.

I have it now but don't use it. The case is rather battered but the cutlery is fine.

I had an Arthur Price canteen when I got married. A lot of it had been replace many times over because my DCs take the spoons and forks to school end lose them! 😡😡😡

Ponoka7 · 29/07/2021 09:12

I bought my DD and her partner an expensive canteen set when they started living together properly. At Christmas as well as personal gifts I bought them a decent set of carving knives. I lived in a housing association house and would pay out for some things.

I inherited my mother’s Portmeirion Botanic Garden stuff and we use it every day.

MySecretHistory · 29/07/2021 09:45

Mine are silver plated and were less than £100 in about 2009
