Selling a bike - posting for traffic

I'm selling my dear departed dad's bike for a bargain price of £150, I've knocked the price down by quite a bit due to lack of interest. Anyway, I've just had a message on Marketplace asking the condition and price despite it saying both and pictures in the ad, she's responded with "ok but I am currently busy with work, I will send a UPS courier to your home on tomorrow to delivery your cash and collect the item".

How would you respond to this, if it matters I'm in the UK (NW) and she's in Budapest

Don't do it , it's probably a scam!

Yeah I guessed that especially as she wouldn't even be seeing it before buying and I can't imagine a courier giving me cash lol

It's a known scam sadly. The 'courier' will charge you a large amount for insuring the package. Block.

Knew it was dodgy but didn't know how, thanks for clarifying. She's blocked

No-one is buying a second hand bike in Hungary from the UK.

iklboo · 27/07/2021 13:23

Scam. Say you're not willing to deliver outside UK, report & block.

I know right but if I'd have thought it genuine and a courier had arrived and asked me for money he'd have had the door shut in his face. Seems a lot of effort for a £150 bike

Already done Smile

I don't sell much at all online, mostly just on our local FB group, but as I've had no interest thought I'd expand it to Marketplace.

Block and be very alert to any further responses online. Have you tried selling the bike to a local bike shop? There are some around who service and repair bikes and sell them as well as new ones. That's what I did. It was easy and straightforward and I wanted convenience more than anything.

I second @Abitofalark - we've sold DS's bikes via our local bike shop. They told us what they'd be selling it for, less a small (and very reasonable) fee and called when it had sold. No hassle or chancers!

Would that shop's initials be TTBS?

@Googlewasmyidea1 - no the other one near the pub Wink

Tibtab · 27/07/2021 14:15

Sometimes what happens is the courier pays you by PayPal but gives you more money “by accident”, then you are asked to pay back the difference.
Later, the whole payment is found to be fraudulent e.g. they used a stolen card/account and the whole payment is reversed. If you have already paid them some of the money (you won’t get this back) and you won’t have the £150 or the bike.
I suppose they don’t actually want the bike, just the money.

Ah yes, I think he must've have bought it from that one or the other one that is no longer there....near the restaurant in the centre of town that has changed names many, many times

Makes sense. I'll stick to (hopefully) selling locally or through a shop Smile

If it sounds to good to be true, or strange, you are better safe than sorry :)

Sh05 · 27/07/2021 14:28

I've had this exact message a couple of times on gumtree! When I Googled the name of the potential buyer it belonged to a well known footballer the first time and a cricketer the second.

iklboo · 27/07/2021 15:10

Yes - I can't keep up with the name changes. It's something else now! Grin

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 27/07/2021 15:37

Perhaps you could suggest to her that she comes over from Budapest by train and then cycles home?

EmeraldShamrock · 27/07/2021 15:39

It's a scam.

StoneofDestiny · 27/07/2021 18:06

StoneofDestiny · 27/07/2021 18:09

Had something similar - said they were disabled and couldn’t collect themselves. Just block
