To buy my neighbours a bin?

The house next door has been converted into 2 flats. For the 2 households they have one wheelie bin with the lid missing.

Every week bags of rubbish get piled up outside their home. One wheelie wouldn’t be enough for the two households anyway, but without a lid it means foxes regularly rip open the bags and throw the rubbish everywhere. There are also loads of flies around the bags in this hot weather. Yesterday I saw a mouse.

I don’t want to confront them. One of them has their flat up for sale ( with not much luck - probably due to the mess outside). I imagine neither house wants to fork out for a new wheelie.

Should I just buy them two wheelies and have them delivered to their front door? Total cost will be around £100.

Confused

Well, I guess if you can afford it, and want to spend your money on that, then you can do

My council has a facility where you can go online and request a bin for certain addresses.

I asked for one for my neighbour, as the landlord hadn't told the council of the change from two flats to three.

Just to add, the council were more than happy to take three lots of council tax for the one house, they just didn't seem to shift their arses about bins.

Sausage222 · 27/07/2021 10:59

Thanks - my London council don’t provide bins unfortunately 😩

Yes that's a good idea, buy them the bins and everyone wins.

AlCalavicci · 27/07/2021 11:29

While it is a very nice gesture from you I would be confused if a new bin just turned up on my doorstep and would presume it belonged to someone else .
Why dont you have a chat with them and offer to go half's on a bin ( or two ) that way they get the bins they need it wont cost you as much and if you ever need a bit of extra bin space you can use theirs / yours

Datingandnoideahowto · 27/07/2021 11:31

Why would you do this? I’m really confused. Surely you’d just report the mess to environmental health?

Sausage222 · 27/07/2021 11:52

Thanks - I have reported it. They say they can’t do anything as they don’t provide wheelie bins and assume everyone puts their food waste in the (free) recyclable food bins. If residents put their food waste in refuse bags and don’t have a wheelie bin - there is nothing they can do to stop pests.

My lid was on my bin when I put it out. After the bin men had been it was no longer there. I emailed and they were looking into it. I didn't want to use the bin as it filled up with rain water. Cost me £27. Hope no one nicks it!!

Ponoka7 · 27/07/2021 12:00

If you can afford it, then do it and write the address it's for on the lid. Get some stick on numbers as well

Wilkolampshade · 27/07/2021 12:05

I'd do it too OP. After all it'll make your life considerably more pleasant.
I know what that kind of mess is like and it gets v grim in summer.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 27/07/2021 12:07

Do it!

I'd pay £100 not to have food waste spread all over the street outside my house, mice rats etc.

I'd probably just say silent and hoped they thought the council brought it spontaneously, to avoid looking passive aggressive - in case they got insulted and didn't use the bin to make a point. Maybe need to make sure there is a note on it saying "number 22a Hope St" or whatever so they know it's for them.

DogsSausages · 27/07/2021 12:30

You can buy 110L waste bins with lids from Amazon for under £20. I would speak to ndn and say there are flies and mice so would it be ok to use bin , they can put the bags in them and take them out for the bin collection to take away.

Googlewasmyidea1 · 27/07/2021 12:34

I certainly wouldn't be buying bins for people who were too tight arsed to sort it themselves, I would go round there and ask them to please sort out their rubbish or take it to the tip as you're worried about vermin

Seesawmummadaw · 27/07/2021 12:36

Definitely worth it if they use it!
