Hotel windows

We just stayed at a well known hotel chain. We checked in and went to our room. I really needed the toilet but thought i'd wait until dh returned from parking the car. I opened the curtains to check out the view and saw the sash window was open at the bottom which left a big gap.

I had a horrible panic that if i had gone to the toilet, my 2yo could have easily climbed out of the window and fallen out. We were on floor 3!

I mentioned it to reception and they said they do this in all rooms in the hot weather. Aibu to think this is completely dangerous? They did a lot of eye rolling and I was made to feel over the top.

Also if you go abroad many places are not child safe, it’s up to the parents to ensure child doesn’t fall out the window/off the balcony/through the stair-rail etc. We once had a very nerve wracking holiday to a 4* family friendly resort in Egypt. They’d remembered the cot but when we pointed out the various hazards (like the balcony, which had a 1ft wall so was more like a flat roof) they just shrugged and laughed and made out we were overly anxious!

I think it’s dangerous to get used to U.K./European safety standards as they’re not upheld everywhere (including where you’d expect them to be like in your hotel). Always always check first. When travelling with young kids I used to bring portable window locks and door wedges too (the type that alerts you if child tries to open door/window) as so many hotels don’t have child secure locks! Or there’s a ‘safe’ balcony with table and chair next to the balcony rail, and a sliding door to access this balcony that doesn’t lock properly! I think we had to tie that one with a sock so DD couldn’t sneak out at night!

@StrangeToSee I understand what you mean but I also think the hotel has a duty to prevent injuries from happening. I spoke to the customer service today and they're going to investigate it immediately thankfully as they confirmed no window should be able to open in the way ours did. I got the impression from the receptionist that they had the same windows in the other rooms too.

I still think it had a faulty limiter and reception staff just told you it was fine because they all open based on the fact that they do all open, just not so far
