To Say 'Please Move Away From My Table'

We were in a Wetherspoons yesterday lunchtime (not somewhere we've visited before) and that particular Wetherspoons had the previous restrictions in place, with notices explaining why. Since many restrictions were removed I've still worn a mask in the supermarket, and put one as I'm going into public toilets. Wetherspoons had the plastic screens still in place, but the table we used only had a screen on one side. Our table was in front of the bar. We used the app to order, but a lot of people were ordering at the bar (took 20 bloody minutes to sort it out, so I'm with them).

No problem until people decided to form a queue right next to us at the table as we were eating, even resting on chair-arms. Should have I said, 'please piss off, take yourself three feet away from me', or just put up with it (as we did) until we could get a table outside, which we eventually did.

@SleepingStandingUp

Forget covid, its bloody bad manners to be resting your arms on chairs clearly at someone's table.
This. I'd ask someone to move their arm off my chair wherever I was. And Covid or not.

@Hdhdjejdj

I have a family member who works for Wetherspoons. In all honesty they are a great employer. They pay above the minimum wage and certainly in their branch they really look after their staff. Family member also is now paid bonus from share profits. The staff were all really nervous when the #neverspoons boycott happened because they didn’t know if they had jobs to go back to but it seems like they are doing ok after the restrictions were lifted.
Thank you for giving the other side.

We’re frequent users of Wetherspoons on holiday or we’d never be able to eat out, and love the non-music/ blaring sports TVs and the way old buildings are used

@Saidtoomuch

That's brilliant *@RyanAirVeteran*, you are my new hero! Seperate issue - Are we really suggesting boycotting a company because, amongst other reasons, their owner voted differently to us? Really?
Separate issue - exactly!

I get the whole boycott Wetherspoon, but in reality, it's cheap and convenient. Can I just check those who refuse to use the pub chain out of principle also boycott the endless list of companies out there exploiting their workforce, avoiding tax, and just being generally crap at caring for the environment, Amazon for example? I didn't think so...
What is the point of asking a question and then answering it straight away
whynotwhatknot · 28/07/2021 10:43

its rude anytime to lean on peoples chair that theyre sitting on should have asked them to move

Hdhdjejdj · 28/07/2021 10:46

@Abracadabra12345 You’re welcome. The reality is that a lot of people find it affordable which is why it’s popular. Certainly the older customers, a lot of whom live on their own, find it a lifeline.
The idea they are exploiting their staff isn’t our experience. I know that when a customer made a homophobic remark to a member of staff, that customer was immediately barred. When customers call staff members c#%ts, because they are trying to enforce Covid rules, the managers ask them to leave straight away. Certainly the managers we know have bent over backwards to care for their staff over the past 18 months.

fuckyeahpercywigwam · 28/07/2021 11:09

Well, if you must patronise a Wetherspoon's, then this is what you must expect.

I went to one once. Never again.

AuntieMarys · 28/07/2021 12:26

Sam Smiths are worse than Werherspoons.

This Even before Covid this would piss me off.

@SpaceshiptoMars >"YANBU. If you've managed to reach your 50th decade, not only are you doing something right, you're doing everything right!"
Now you've pointed that out, although maths is definitely not my strong point Hmm, have I stated I'm around 500 years old Grin? I'm surprised you're the first one to point that out - what an idiot (me, I mean). Due to their rejuvenating effect, I will now be visiting a Wetherspoons everyday for the rest of my life Grin.

I used to like a Wetherspoons (good value and did what it did well IMO) but it's been going downhill for a while now, plus the awful treatment of staff etc. I won't be going back. I used to go for breakfast quite often Blush but it wasn't what it was even before the pandemic hit.

Terhou · 28/07/2021 23:27

In addition to the myths about Wetherspoons' treatment of their staff, it's worth being aware that they's extremely hot on keeping up hygiene standards, with regular very thorough audit checks.

itsnotmeitsu · 28/07/2021 23:30

@IdblowJonSnow > "Congratulations on reaching your 50th decade OP! You're clearly invincible and have no need to ever worry about anything again!"
Yes, I've now realised there's a reason I was bumped down from 'O' level maths lessons to CSE, and still got a low grade Grin. Thanks to you and a previous poster I now realise I'm a vampire and will never had to worry about covid-19 again - Oh no!! Can you catch it through sucking blood? What an idiot, but thanks for making me laugh Grin. Perhaps my vampire status will mean people give me a large berth in any Wetherspoons I choose to frequent in the future Smile.

Tim Martin did not sack any of his staff!
We were all furloughed and didn't miss a single wage.
Boycott Spoons because you hate Tim Martin's politics or because you don't like the food or whatever but not because of some false idea that the staff have somehow been wronged.

We get above minimum wage, monthly and quarterly bonuses, free shares, free food and drink, good discounts and flexible shifts which as a single parent are a godsend for me.

We have moved all our tables away from the bar OP. It sounds rubbish where you were sat. It's rude of people to crowd you and lean on your chair at any time not just Covid times. YANBU.

I boycott spoons on principle, as the owner was such a vocal Brexit supporter. For various other reasons, including the tax issue, I also boycott Amazon, Starbucks, Dyson, Next, Primark, McDonalds, KFC, Dominoes and many other businesses.

Your assumption was wrong
