Selfish parking.

We live down a road where on street parking is very restrictive owing to a lot of people having drives.
We can’t have a drive because of location of street light and a postbox. My neighbour opposite has a double drive. Him and his wife both have cars as does their son. For the last 3 months they have been parking in front of my house ( aware it’s not my space!) they always do it so as one car leaves they reverse the other car into the space. So no one other than them can park there. They have an empty drive and moved car off drive into space to keep it free. It’s getting really tedious and when I’ve spoken to them they don’t seem to get why it would annoy people.

I think you can apply to have both light and post box relocated at a cost. You can then install your own drive.

redandwhite1 · 26/07/2021 19:38

Totally get you

Not the same but we live on a road where it's all on street no drives, some neighbours in particular park in the middle of 2 spaces and means sometimes overall we're losing 3-4 spaces in total

Massive bug bear selfish parking so I feel for you - could you move your car every time they go out to make sure you get it?

AndSoFinally · 26/07/2021 19:50

Say to them since their drive is constantly empty and they prefer to park right outside your house, would they mind if you parked on their drive as the on street parking is so limited? They'll probably say no, but it might drum it home that they're being a bit selfish

DontStopMeNow1 · 26/07/2021 19:52

Park on their drive - apparently it's not illegal ...

CassandraTrotter · 26/07/2021 19:53

It is appallingly selfish behaviour. But you know the rules about parking threads so not sure i can vote yanbu quite yet.

They will probably just discuss how entitled OP is to even suggest that.

Oh yes! We have those. Some of us have Post Its! ready written

CONGRATULATIONS you bagged yourself 2 parking spaces Grin

Having been caught putting one on a car I explained, patiently, to the driver that I wasn't trying to bagsy the space outside my house. Just trying to stop him from bagsying 2 of them. He didn't seem to get it.

A week later he did it again but his OH sorted it. She placed their double buggy, kids included, in front of the car, sideways. Walked to the back of the car and did it again and shouted "yes, that's 2 spaces" and then waved him in to something more convenient for the rest of us.

I may have bought her a cup of coffee for that kindness Smile

We have applied multiple times at a cost of £280 each time and been rejected. Citing postbox cannot be moved. 😩

I’ve mentioned it to them numerous times and said about parking on their drive but they don’t get it. I’m tempted to buy an old banger and next time they move to park it there

Urgh! They sound really selfish!

We have a similarish issue. All houses on our road have drives and most have space for at least two cars. Ours only has space for one but we’re saving up to change that.

There are four/five ‘spaces’ on the road that are first come first served. Three bays and one lay-by (can squeeze two in the lay-by if parked sensibly). The house two down from us had three cars and recently bought a fourth (two belong to the husband, one to the wife and one is shared by their adult children). They used to park one on their drive, one by the side of our house (their land so no complaints about that and it didn’t impact on us at all) and one in a bay. Now they have the fourth one, they’re taking up two bays. Quite frequently, they park THREE in the bays and leave their drive empty. Angry It’s just incredibly selfish!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 26/07/2021 20:41

Just what is it with people who have drives but never use them. Is it possible to park across the entrance to their drive? If they complain that you're blocking their drive access, ask them why they need drive access, as they never ever use it. What can they say to that?

I think it should be made the law that you can apply to have a dropped kerb re-instated with a standard one, and thus create an additional standard parking space(s) for anybody to use, if you can show evidence that the householders neither need nor want to use it by having vehicles yet always parking them on the road.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 26/07/2021 20:45

I get the idea behind occasionally 'saving' a space by moving your vehicle(s) off your drive and on to the road if you're expecting a visitor/workmen/skip etc., but what is the actual point of saving a space on the road when you simply don't need it?

The whole benefit of having a drive is that you have permanent access to your own exclusive land for parking and never need to concern yourself with competing with others to try to get a space on the public road.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 26/07/2021 20:50

Apply to the council for permission for a skip - ideally the longest one you can find. They normally only charge one fee for delivering it empty and then taking it away full, regardless of how long you want to keep it.

In fact, if you can get one with an opening loading 'gate' at the end, with some judicious use of a couple of homemade ramps, hey presto, you then have your own reserved parking space Grin Although, you might get your car regularly covered with all of the neighbours' junk....

DontStopMeNow1 · 26/07/2021 21:04

Post boxes CAN be moved! One at the top of our street was relocated - mind you, it was a small one built into the wall, don't know if this makes a difference.

redandwhite1 · 26/07/2021 22:34

@CuriousaboutSamphire yesss loving the post it's! Might do this!!!!

Duchess379 · 28/07/2021 20:47

I'd park on their drive. If they ask you to move, ask them to move their car so you can have that space. I live on a small estate where parking is a premium. Everyone has allocated parking but prefer to 'park outside our own house' so no room for visitors and my drive gets blocked.. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Summersun2020 · 28/07/2021 20:58

Absolutely agree park in their space! I get that nobody owns the road but I think they’re being massively unreasonable and purposely being dickheads for the sake of it here. Cheeky selfish entitled fuckers.
