Band B Council housing

Hi , I'm in band B waiting to be rehoused. I'm struggling with the stairs in my flat I'm in at the moment. I was just wondering how long people have waiting in band B. And I've seen people saying about bidding ? What does that mean 🤔

Thanks ❤

Im band A, have been for 2 years.
Got my hopes up thinking as im top of the list it would be quite quick Sad

No bidding, just offered when something comes up.
Hope you get something soon

Nobody can tell you that without knowing what LA you are in! It's different everywhere.

Does your LA not have a bidding system for properties? If so and you aren't bidding, you'll never get moved!

LakieLady · 26/07/2021 12:15

It varies so much from council to council and depending on the kind of property you need that only someone in the same council area and with the same needs could give you an idea, @JessicaHonhold.

Are you in private rented accommodation at the moment or is this just a transfer within the council? Transfers tend to happen quicker, because they can then relet your old house, so they get 2 households off the list.

I'm guessing you need a bungalow or g/f flat if you can't do stairs. Where I live, you could get somewhere quite quickly, eg 6-9 months, especially if you were ok with being in a small village. The council has a fair few one and 2-bed bungalows and because they tend to be let to older people they become vacant reasonably often.

"Bidding" is when the council publish details of vacant properties for people on the waiting list to express an interest in, ie "bid". The council will look at all the interested parties and the property will be offered to whoever has the highest priority band.

If you're eligible to bid, they will have given you a bidding number. Some councils prefer to let properties suitable for people with disabilities directly, rather than through the bidding system.

Ask your housing officer if you're not sure if you should be doing anything.

I'm with St mungos housing association. I'm in Milton Keynes UK. The flat I'm in isn't suitable for me so they have transfer me to the council.

Oo OK they haven't given Me a bidding number so they might just be offering me directly. But I will ask thank you 😊 @LakieLady

I got a direct offer but it took 3 years on band b but I am in London so depends where you are

SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 26/07/2021 13:19

I'm in the south east and only waited a couple of months once we were designated Band B. Really does vary from area to area though.

Minecraftlover · 26/07/2021 13:33

I was on band b and got a lovely house in 3 months, am in North East. Good luck Flowers

Karaokehell2021 · 26/07/2021 19:42

We've recently been offered on Band A after 7 months

Rosebel · 26/07/2021 21:54

We're in South Westin band b. We're being made homeless in November with 3 children and have been bidding for over 18 months. LL wants to sell but obviously everything that happened with Covid couldn't evict us before..
No idea how long it will take or what will happen in November. I think you get a higher priority if you have a disability though.

sparemonitor · 26/07/2021 22:12

In Haringey band A can expect a 5 to 10 year wait and the other bands are never offered

SilverDoe · 02/08/2024 17:20

@JessicaHonhold Not sure if you'd still be on Mumsnet but did you ever get anywhere?

I'm also with St Mungo's in Milton Keynes and need to be referred back to the council for rehousing, did you get a new place in the end? 😊
