AIBU - TUI refusing amendment to honeymoon booking

Hello! I booked a week away well over a year ago (honeymoon) - not believing Covid would still be a thing then. Little did I know obviously!

The destination was on the red list then moved to the green list - we assumed we would need to go as the trip could go ahead. Fine, got all prepared - booked the tests as per guidelines etc.

The country moved back to the amber list, so I tried to call TUI. Their automated message states that if a trip has been affected by guideline changes they would contact us. They were contacting people who's trip was leaving within the next seven days. Our wasn't so I hung up and waited to hear from them.

I messaged their Facebook page last week as I was getting a bit twitchy. I can see from their Facebook page people are on hold for hours then being cut off so I didn't try to call again. May have been a mistake but I was a little preoccupied with last minute wedding prep. On my wedding day I received a response stating we would lose all of our money due to cancelling so close to the date. I sent another message again explaining it wasn't really our choice to cancel - the country had moved to the amber list. The self isolation rules on return means my partner can't go (he can't take 10 days off work on return) I am double jabbed but don't really want to go on my honeymoon alone.

AIBU in expecting to be able to change the booking? Or at least get the cost of my partner's half back towards a new booking (as I could go within the rules so can begrudgingly accept they won't refund/change mine)?

I’m sorry I’m no expert but I wouldn’t have thought they are obliged to offer you anything if it’s amber list, as you are still able to go in theory. Why isn’t your partner double jabbed too is it his age? If so it does seem unfair.
If he didn’t want the vaccine of course that’s his choice but this is one of the consequences

Muma1992 · 26/07/2021 08:56

TUI will see it as it's not their fault that your husband can't get time off work to isolate on his return. They also didn't know the country would change to amber. I'm not saying it's fair, I'm saying that is how they will see it.

This is unfortunately just the risk you took when booking. I also can't believe it is still going on. It feels like we're in a nightmare, living through a pandemic for all this time. Can you travel insurance help you?

Geamhradh · 26/07/2021 08:58

Unless they cancel, you aren't as far as I know (and depending on your T&C at the time) entitled to anything. Tui are pretty transparent.

Ughmaybenot · 26/07/2021 09:01

So bloody disappointing for you, but I think unfortunately they’ve been quite clear and within their ‘rules’. Technically you can both go, any extra time off issues isn’t really their problem, as harsh as that sounds.

AreTUItwats · 26/07/2021 09:03

Fair enough thank you all. He is having the vaccine just not due the 2nd dose until next month. He went to a walk in clinic to try and get it earlier but was told no. I guess we'll just have to suck this one up.

Seeing him called my husband made me smile this morning anyway! We only just got married on Saturday 😀

Aaah congratulations, it’s a lovely feeling Flowers

SmidgenofaPigeon · 26/07/2021 09:06

But you can go, that’s the issue- it just makes it more awkward for you with the quarantine- but that’s not their problem. As an aside how come you have both jabs but your partner hasn’t- are they just waiting on their second?

Owlettele · 26/07/2021 09:17

Can your husband not bring his second jab forward?

Owlettele · 26/07/2021 09:18

Sorry OP saw your update about the walk in. I cancelled and rebooked through the site. Which meant mine was weeks earlier . Is this an option?

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 26/07/2021 09:20

@Owlettele

Can your husband not bring his second jab forward?
You need to have had it at least 14 days before your holiday.

I thought TUI were allowing ALL customers to move their holiday free of charge? Is that an option for you rather than cancelling? If you booked online it should give you the option on your booking

Endeavour1971 · 26/07/2021 09:27

I had a holiday to Tunisia booked for the end of August. As they are on the red list I assumed it would be cancelled. But I was able to just change my booking online without having to phone them. If you go onto Manage My Booking on the Tui app or website you can change the destination or dates FOC

RevolvingPivot · 26/07/2021 09:32

Can he try another walk in? There are quite a few where I live.

ohthatbloodycat · 26/07/2021 09:36

I'm really sorry OP, but it's always been the case that if you cancel - irrespective of reason - you don't get your money back. You have to wait for them to do it, even if it is a bit last minute.
It absolutely sucks and of course by your logic you should be able to cancel ... after all, you're only bringing forward the inevitable!
Hope you manage to work something out - and what a message to receive on your wedding day! Sad Congratulations, btw.

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 26/07/2021 09:56

Their rules around rebooking and cancelling with COVID are very clear. You could have spent five minutes reading their website and rescheduled free of charge, but instead you cancelled. YABU

AreTUItwats · 26/07/2021 10:22

@HeyDemonsItsYaGirl I didn't cancel? I tried to contact them to did out what was happening. The destination was moved to the amber list 2 weeks before departure. I want to reschedule - they are saying no.

As I said, will suck it up.

Thanks for the congratulations 🎉

Can your husband try another walk in center or try the back booking site.
My second jab was meant to be at the end of Aug but i got it yesterday. All changed through the booking site. I just clicked there and it showed me some available dates that are closer so I cancelled the other one and booked this immediately.
I don’t need it to travel but just wanted the second vaccine asap

pinkcircustop · 26/07/2021 10:34

YABU. It’s amber, so you can still go and therefore they don’t have to refund you. It’s not their problem your DP won’t be able to take time off to isolate.

Theredjellybean · 26/07/2021 10:38

I have rearranged two holidays with tui for similar issues and they were so helpful.
I waited 1.5 hrs on hold each time. Not too bad.
You need to get on phone and wait to explain to someone

Orangemochafrappacino · 26/07/2021 10:41

Surely you can reschedule you just have to pay the amendment fee if its within 14 days of your travel date? And any additional holiday cost of course.

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 26/07/2021 10:46

Eh? You said "I received a response stating we would lose all of our money due to cancelling so close to the date. I sent another message again explaining it wasn't really our choice to cancel" which suggests you cancelled. Confused

Anyway, as I said, it's all very clear on their website.

Sirzy · 26/07/2021 10:49

What’s the time gap between the contact with them and the honeymoon was due?
