What's not that deep? Am I missing something obvious?

bloodywhitecat · 26/07/2021 00:11

"It's not that deep!" Does that even make sense?

sergeilavrov · 26/07/2021 00:16

Means stop being so dramatic/it’s not a big deal. Often accompanied with an eye roll. DH responds with “psych, my dude” which seems to induce horror in DN, who has decided to start speaking properly.

dontgobaconmyheart · 26/07/2021 00:17

I'm in my (low) thirties and I feel as though some of my friends also say this (mostly ironically in their defence) as a cure all quip for anything they think someone is making too big of a deal about.

I think it's annoying because it seems smug and rude really rather than being annoying in itself, it's basically 'shutup' with a side of 'you're embarrassing yourself/get a grip'

grapewine · 26/07/2021 00:21

It is dismissive and annoying. I can just about deal with it in teens, but when adults do it I want to tell them they're not as cool as they think they are.

LeonieSims · 26/07/2021 00:36

I'm 25 and use this phrase. It just means it's not that serious/not that big of a deal.

Yellownotblue · 26/07/2021 00:37

If you want your teens to stop using slang, start using it yourself and let reverse psychology take its course. 😁

Totally this. Throw in a few "fam" and its mission accomplished
MadMadMadamMim · 26/07/2021 00:42

I would find it rude and dismissive. if they want to use slang I find reading up on it and then deliberately using it badly is excruciating for them. I've been known to say Have a jolly "peng" evening! as the teen heads out with friends.

Pick random Stormzy words and throw them into conversations...I find it goes well with the fact that I'm white, overweight and frumpy, almost 60 and have a Scunthorpe accent...

ElBarstardoMonkfish · 26/07/2021 00:46

Urgh, You’re being dramatic. It’s not that deep means, stop shitting yourself. It’s easily solvable. You’re not going to die over it.

Not necessarily just for teens, originated from those in their 20s, probably about 15 at the time, made popular by Stormzy’s song, not that deep in early 2010s.

ElBarstardoMonkfish · 26/07/2021 00:49

Btw, using slang incorrectly will not put your teens off using slang. It’ll make them laugh. Don’t listen to others, it won’t make the slightest difference. Use it correctly, then they’ll maybe cringe, but I highly doubt it.

Mockolate · 26/07/2021 01:08

Yep, soo annoying lol

I get "It's not that deep, bro!" Hmm Grin

Tubbytele · 26/07/2021 01:49

I'm a secondary school teacher and once when one of my students said it, I replied: then don't be so shallow. Stopped them using the word deep ever again in class.

Notjustanymum · 26/07/2021 12:01

The correct response is, of course, “ that hole you’re digging for yourself will be, though...”

YetAnotherSpartacus · 26/07/2021 12:05

Watch the Brady Bunch and pick up some groovy 70s slang and throw it right back at them.

phoenixrosehere · 26/07/2021 12:12

Recall it being used in early 2000s by adults

Thehop · 26/07/2021 12:53

@MadMadMadamMim I think I love you

tallduckandhandsome · 26/07/2021 12:58

Argh that sounds annoying. Speak back to them in faux Regency: Dost thou need to be so block headed?

Mydogisagentleman · 26/07/2021 13:09

My DD says ‘don’t deep it’
