To be annoyed with the idolisation of Olympic athletes?

Floogal · 25/07/2021 20:26

Sick of this every 4 years. I am not against the Olympics per se. I like watching the judo, boxing, handball and volleyball. But these points explain why I find hero worship of athletes annoying.

  1. People are very quick to moan about how footballers are overpaid for simply playing football. Or Connor McGregor being on benefits while training to be in the UFC. They are fair points, however Olympic atheltes paid a healthy income and have a lot of their expenses paid for.
  2. Similar to the previous point, I hate the way they are lauded by the media and given honours for doing something that pays quite well and that they enjoy.
  3. I remember last week we were watching ITV news. There was a feature about private sector carers being overworked and underpaid and how it impacts their personal lives. Later there was a documentary about Olympic athletes, many going on about sacrificing their leisure and family lives. Bit hard to feel sorry for them.
  4. The government and media (as well as professional athletes) like to go on about how obese and unhealthy most people are. Well most people would love to only worry about excercise and nutrition, but SOME OF US HAVE TO WORK FOR A LIVING!
  5. This point has been touched upon by the media and few recent MN threads. Many of the athletes come from affluent backgrounds!
  6. The athletes featured on the Purple Bricks adverts come across as really unpleasant. Bit of a backfire.

What does everyone else think?

Remember the "Sporting Giants" programme? HElen Glover and Victoria Thornley were identified for rowing through that.

There was one called go for gold
They basically assess you then give you a sport.
Dd was terrified she'd get bobsleigh or speed skating 😂

I understand from my university days a long time ago before career and parenthood etc, that Loughborough University was pretty competitive in most sports and indeed a de facto sports oriented university? While Oxbridge was also pretty good at many sports including less popular ones like lacrosse and real tennis which is rarely played by university students elsewhere. The Varsity Games against the other blue team afforded us much appreciation and training to complete also against other former junior internationals attending university and competing for numerous universities nationally. Loughborough stood out in my day as being the one to beat in many sports. I believe they offered USA style scholarships for those with particular sporting abilities and provided good coaches and facilities.

Nottingham University from memory provided many excellent better than most sporting facilities especially hosting many events. Although not my sport, I believe for instance there is the national canoe facility nearby in Nottingham.

Not sure if Loughborough is still excellent in sport these days or not. At Oxbridge we had internal collegiate competitions and then it was the goal to make the Varsity squad and hopefully selected in the first full Blue team in Varsity and at national universities tournaments.

Sports in university in therefore another option to further and push sporting potential while studying and yes working part time to stay financially healthy and more independent!

On the senior school front I recall Millfield in Somerset being relatively more sports orientated than most schools of note but again that was decades ago and much may have changed.

In the mass popularity sports such as boys and men’s football there is of course the well established football youth academies root attached to most professional football teams.

Again post university to continue various amateur sports and particularly in London there are the various local leagues and a stand out for my sport is the civil service leagues and sporting facilities open to representatives from outside of the civil service too as long as your were competitive in your chosen field and a good social networking platform with a shared common interest.

Sports for most is unknown personal achievement without fame nor fortune but all that hard dedication and crafting is good for a solid healthy foundation for life long participation if not also occasional competition if still relatively up to scratch! Only a few popular big media spectator and sports betting sports make it into the big money leagues as most sports is at your own time, energy and expense and that is if you had a very high skill level to begin with! It’s hard work for only personal satisfaction and minimal financial reward but big out of own pocket expense unless it is the usual televised professional sports with big business sponsorships etc. The Olympians particularly in the smaller UK participation sports without big financial competition prizes deserve more admiration for their skill and sheer determination against all the odds and much personal investment with possibly little return other than some branded national
team kit etc.

My parents neighbour won a silver at the last Olympics. She's from a very average background and lives in a small 2 bed flat in one of the cheaper parts of the city. She's hardly rolling in it but trains incredibly hard and is dedicated at the expense of other things. A choice obviously but it's not easy. Obviously things like the equestrian team, you are incredibly unlikely to make it far without money behind you but not all the sports are elitist by a long shot.

mynameiscalypso · 28/07/2021 19:41

I saw something on social media that Bath Uni would be 6th or 7th in the medal table if it was a country!

MorganKitten · 30/07/2021 20:00

The BMX team had to crowdfund… they are from working class backgrounds with no funding.

checkoutchick22 · 30/07/2021 20:06

Came on here hoping the op has had their arsenal handed back to them....

The op is completely missing the point of the Olympics, and the fact that most of them are professionals in their careers as well as training and having a dream to compete for their country in a world thats turning to shit!

The Olympics encapsulate the human spirit, willingness to perservere, to have a passion that pushes you to the brink of endurance.

I feel sorry for you.

AngryWhompingWillow · 30/07/2021 20:18

@Floogal You MUST know YABU. Come on! Hmm

Can take or leave the Olympics. Caught a few minutes’ coverage of the BMX biking today: lovely to watch, just unadulterated joy from the medal winners. That’s what it’s all about, their love of their sport.

igelkott2021 · 30/07/2021 20:39

Yes I wonder if the OP has read the story of the female BMX gold medal winner. She thoroughly deserves her success. She definitely doesn't seem to have been born with a silver spoon in her mouth.

Loughborough is still a fantastic sports university. But there are others like Bath, Leeds/Leeds Beckett, Cardiff Met, Birmingham Stirling to name but a few. DS applied to Hull university among others, which I notice offers sports scholarships.

Do you not get joy from seeing the delight of others success? i do.
BMXgolditis · 31/07/2021 07:50

Only the BMX women had their UK Sport funding removed.

I joined a campaign to get this re instated, i had a letter from UK Sport, it said that the females had not had any success and the view was they never would.

Its an amazing sport for kids, we need more sports facilities for children but it comes down to where you live, if you can access them.

OverByYer · 01/08/2021 13:40

Loving the athletics today. Especially Rojas breaking the world record.

JudgeJ · 01/08/2021 14:28

@mygenericusername

A lot of the athletes have full time careers outside of their Olympic ambitions.

Your post is incredibly ignorant. While some receive good sponsorship deals and funding, the majority do not.

I would far rather my grandchildren idolised an Olympian rather than one of those ghastly Love Island types or any of the other social media nonentities.

She is incredible isn't she? What a jump!
CaveMum · 01/08/2021 16:51

Bethany Shriever, who this week won Gold in the BMX racing had to crowdfund £50k in order to find her training and travel costs. She also worked part-time as a TA at a nursery in Cambridge in order to, y’know feed, clothe and house herself.

Watch “Gold Rush” which was about the change in attitude to the Olympics by UK Sport after our abysmal showing in Atlanta 96 - Dame Kelly Holmes talks about trying to juggle her army career with training as an athlete, having to use her annual leave to go and compete.

OverByYer · 01/08/2021 20:23

Rojas reminds me of Yazz

Rojas reminds me of Yazz
Yes! Definitely facially and hair. But what a body, the length of her legs, incredible. She was made for a sport like the triple jump, pole vault.Good genes and hard work!

Yes. I thought that what I was saying 🤷‍♀️

Fizbosshoes · 02/08/2021 07:36

I also thought of Yazz! Her (Rojas) physique was amazing although a bit jealous that her legs are probably twice as long as mine

Bryonyshcmyony · 02/08/2021 07:38

Rojas is an absolute legend.
