To ask my cleaner to clean my fridge?

I’m about to get a regular cleaner for the first time after moving into a new place. I know that usually for a one off clean if you want to do things like fridge and oven cleans, you pay extra but for a regular cleaner would it be mean/rude to ask her to clean it so I can start buying more groceries. I would do it myself (along with my regular cleaning) but I have back issues that mean it would be really painful. So WIBU?

I think it’s fine (as long as it’s not full of rotting food!), but you’ll have to pay for the additional time if you expect cleaver to go round the house too

Ichoochoochoosethis · 25/07/2021 19:20

Cleaner even 🙄

statetrooperstacey · 25/07/2021 19:23

I would ask, and if I were a cleaner I would do it.

LtDansleg · 25/07/2021 19:26

It’s fine to ask. It’s only on mn where people get offended at the thought of a cleaner having to do anything other than dust and mop.

weeme02 · 25/07/2021 19:26

I clean and a few clients have asked me to clean their fridges for them which I've been happy to do

strivingtosucceed · 25/07/2021 23:19

Great, thanks! I’m happy that I’m not stepping out of line. No the fridge isn’t full of rotting food @Ichoochoochoosethis in fact it’s barely got anything in it. It just needs a quick wipe/rinse before I can feel comfortable putting more stuff in it. And I’m quite happy to only do the kitchen + bathroom this week and leave the rest. 😁

Disabled people need their fridges cleaned too. And other big jobs we can't do.

So when you discuss your cleaner you state this and say, I'd like x done at this interval also y also done too, can you please advise if you are happy to do so as my cleaner as it's part of the role I am employing you for. If s/he says no, then s/he isn't the cleaner for you

ohthatbloodycat · 26/07/2021 00:37

I think it's totally fine, if given adequate time to do it, or in lieu of other jobs around the house Smile

BeQuietBrenda · 26/07/2021 00:54

I used to be a cleaner and my general cleans wouldn't have involved a fridge clean or a change of bedding for example. However I had a couple of ladies with disabilities and they asked me to do an odd job here and there that wouldn't usually be covered - I always did it. It was things like a fridge clean, bed changes, take washing baskets up or down stairs, that kind of thing. One lady I got quite friendly with and I would clean her cat litter trays (am a cat lover luckily!) she didn't ask but I wanted to help.

So, just ask she can only say no.

My cleaner cleans my fridge once a month. She empties it out, cleans it than puts stuff back. She cleans the inside of my windows too and changes child's bed. Like you I have arthritis of the spine and really struggle with some jobs that involve bending over. She cleans for 2 1/2 hours twice a week and does not seem to mind what jobs she does during this time. She tidied up my shoe rack on Tuesday. In return O agree she can change her days sometimes when she wants to collect her grandson on day she is supposed to be cleaning for me. Give and take.

UpstreamSwimmer · 26/07/2021 01:28

We must be living on different planets. Our cleaner cleans anything that needs cleaning, and she gets paid per hour.

DustyMaiden · 26/07/2021 02:02

You employ them to do what you want them to do. You need give them enough time and pay them.

Hobbesmanc · 26/07/2021 11:11

Surely when you engage someone to clean your home, you tell them what you want doing and if they are happy with that they tell you how long and you agree a price. So there's no doubt about bed changing, ironing, windows etc

MatildaTheCat · 26/07/2021 11:16

My cleaner cleans anything I ask her to including the odd deep clean of the kitchen.

I was a bit surprised when she cleaned all the manky old hair out of my hairbrush Grin

Whatifitallgoesright · 26/07/2021 11:49

Cleaner here. No problem with cleaning fridges although would need extra time. I was baffled when people on MN said they wouldn't dream of leaving their toilet dirty for the cleaner. Weirdos! I've cleaned out cat litters too.
Main issue is when a regular client has changes happen like a very hairy dog or extra people moving in, doesn't extend your hours then drops you for inefficiency. If I was able to stretch time I wouldn't be wasting my own cleaning your sodding house.
