. . . to expect the window cleaner to give the frames a wipe too?

Genuine question and willing to be told "no, they don't normally do this".

Our window cleaner turns up whenever he wants - it could be once a month or once a week, we literally never know when to expect him. Which means we always have to keep a tenner handy in case he shows up. But actually, that's a secondary issue, I'm more bothered about the fact that when he does clean the windows, it's a quick squeegee of the glass only, which means quite often I have to go out and clean cobwebs and dirt off the frames (it's unpleasant to open windows and watch webs stretching and breaking, and wonder if the evicted spiders will relocate inside to set up home again!)

So - AIBU to think that a window cleaner should give the frames a wipe-down too? We just have bog-standard PVC double-glazing, nothing special.

YABU. Don't forget they will have a lot of other houses to clean too. Doesn't take much for you to go out and wipe them down.

TheQueef · 25/07/2021 12:42

Ours charge a £5 extra for frames.

It does if you need a great big ladder! Also if I was going to do that I may as well wash the windows myself.

However in saying the above, they will wash the frames if you pay a small amount more. It is worth paying it.

Pesimistic · 25/07/2021 12:48

Mine did the frames when I had a window cleaner I was paying 20 quid though

RedPandaFluff · 25/07/2021 12:48

@princesslarmadrama it actually does take a lot to go out and give them a wipe down - climbing up ladders etc. It's not a five-minute easy job. But if someone is already up there doing the glass, it would just take a few extra seconds to do the frames.

Makes sense that they'd charge a bit extra - I'd be happy to do that, will ask him next time he's here.

Whenever that will be Grin

Some do it as a matter of course, job well done kind of attitude. Some need to be asked and some charge extra. Any are normal and reasonable.

StapMe · 25/07/2021 12:55

Mine does the windows, the frames and the sills too, and he does a good job. And your post has reminded me that I forgot to pay him last week......

Blossomtoes · 25/07/2021 12:57

Ours does the frames and the outside window ledges. He also texts us the previous day to say he’s coming and only charges a tenner for 11 windows. We insist he takes £15 because we feel like we’re ripping him off.

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 25/07/2021 13:00

We live in South West London and my lovely window cleaner takes an hour to do the windows and frames. He charges £16. He also takes spiders out of the kitchen for me.

RedPandaFluff · 25/07/2021 15:06

An hour?! Ours is here for fifteen minutes tops! And it's not a big house - just an average semi.

Sounds like they’re being very literal! Never had a window cleaner who only cleans the windows and not the frames etc. Always taken that as a given, never been asked if I’d like the frames cleaned as an extra.
Also, always been told when they’re coming so I can leave open the gates -in ye olden days that was either a set date, or a phone call, now a text.
They don’t like cash (for safety i.e. not wanting to be mugged), and I can pay by bank transfer or cheque.

WellTidy · 25/07/2021 15:24

Part of the window cleaning service here to have sills and frames wipes at the same time. That said, it is a pricey service. I pay £60 per visit (every two months or so) and our house isn’t a mansion. It was the cheapest quote I had - one was for £85.

campion · 25/07/2021 15:32

£60?!Shock

I pay £15 and they do the frames and sills as a matter of course. We had an extension last year with bifolds and a floor to ceiling window and they still charge £15. I heart my window cleaners (there are 2 of them).

OP needs to be a little more assertive.

AlwaysLatte · 25/07/2021 15:35

Ours charges £25 but frames are included.

Toottooot · 25/07/2021 15:44

Does your window cleaner actually operate ladders though? We’ve started using a new company and they don’t - they must have super extendable hose type brush things. We much prefer this to our old window cleaner who would climb up on ladders. I think our windows are much cleaner since we swapped.

AlwaysLatte · 25/07/2021 15:44

Some of these window cleaners clearly don't do it properly - 10/15 mins!! Ours is here for at least an hour and uses cloths and distilled water.

2000lightyearsaway123 · 25/07/2021 15:48

Ours specifies that frames and doors are included.

Smartiepants79 · 25/07/2021 15:51

We pay £20. More windows involved though.
Mine does the doors but I don’t think I’ve ever noticed him doing the frames specifically.
But they’re not really dirty so 🤷🏼‍♀️ Maybe he does!!

Maireas · 25/07/2021 17:18

Ours charges £8! He actually apologised when it went up from £6 last year.
Mind you, we are Oop North and he uses regular tap water.

BeyondMyWits · 25/07/2021 17:23

Ours uses an ionised water fed pole thing, no ladders. He wipes the ground floor windowsills.

Bargebill19 · 25/07/2021 17:26

30years ago ours used to charge for window s and frames as separates. Not a new thing.

PrettyBlunt · 25/07/2021 17:42

I pay £12 and he cleans windows, frames and window sills and the front door!
