Drinking so young?

Went to a little get together at someone's home last night. There was a couple there I didn't know. She had 2 children. One was 8, the other 13. The 13 year old was drinking alcopops and beer. Was clearly drunk, they thought it was funny. The 8 year old was drinking alcopops.
Aibu to think this is too young to drink at a party?

The 13 year old was actually drunk? An 8 year old drinking their own alcopops?
You said fuck all?

You are half the problem.

Absolutely! Highly inappropriate.

I can beleive this happened, years ago I went to a pary and there were all ages at the party, the children of the host were allowed to drink a small amount of beer/wine, it was an Italian family and they said the children aged, 9, 11 and 13 were allowed wine with their meals. My own DC at the party were a similar age but not allowed to drink. I think that was more of a culture thing as they didnt drink alcopops, and most children wouldnt like the taste of beer or wine.

I’m shocked that people don’t believe this happened. I was allowed to drink from a very, very young age - I don’t actually remember my first alcoholic drink.

It left me with a drink problem and I’m now teetotal. I’d love to live in a world where this scenario was literally unbelievable. Your kids are incredibly lucky, all you non-believers.

Why would i call social services. It is actually legal. But more of a moral thing. Plus it was my partner's friends we were at and didn't want to make it uncomfortable
Hmm

Screaming at kids is also legal. Hitting them is also legal if no mark is left. Shouting 'you fucking cunt' at your 6 week old baby is also legal.

I assume you'd also ignore people that did that?

Ffs. Be part of the solution rather than gossiping about it on MN.

@DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult

I don't want mine to get used to sweet alcopops so just give them straight vodka.

Its totally fine.

Kills the worms too. Win-win.
SupermanWithTheGreyHair · 25/07/2021 15:38

Are you seeing them again? I mean, I’m pretty tolerant but I couldn’t be friends with people who let their 8 year old drink alcopops. 😬 13.... maybe, if it’s very, very, very occasionally. We let our son have a very occasional drink at home from about 14. He’s 17 now and drinks sensibly with friends. Age 8 though, absolute idiot parents and I wouldn’t be friends with them.

chunderwunder · 25/07/2021 16:55

Definitely too young to drink at a party but probably fine on a school morning.

Absolutely! I was this child too. My parents let me drink in the pub with them and sneaked me drinks from 14. Sometimes at their friends BBQs. I was often very drunk. Left me with a binge drinking problem and I didn't know my limits. Now a days I hardly drink and I wouldn't let my DS drink like my parents let me

I was a lot younger than 14, @Blessedbethefruit01.

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 25/07/2021 18:03

It's not the 80's FFS.
No. Of course they shouldn't be drinking. 🤷🏻‍♀️

EmmalineC · 25/07/2021 20:43

I would have said something. 8 is way too young for booze. And a drunk 13yo is alarming, not funny. What happens when she’s down the park with her mates, and not at a family get together?
