Mine was walking to the shop barefoot and pretending I was going to fetch supplies for my family in the scorching heat in the desert. The old chewing gum used to melt and turn squishy is it was hot enough and I used to squish it with my toes.

Another was going to the river and jumping from one side to the other.

There was a broken tree which all the neighbour kids used to 'live' on and we would go to 'eachothers houses' on the different branches.

basically living in the shallow river.

Going to the coast and going for a walk. Living in Kent, we have a lot of beaches to choose from.

househousehousefox · 24/07/2021 09:22

That would be lovely. We are about 2 hours away from nearest beach so never ever go.
River Bank served as a beach for us

Beach days, lucky to live on the coast and have quiet beaches.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/07/2021 09:25

Sit in the garden with a book and wine and pretend that I'm on holiday somewhere sunny.

Faranth · 24/07/2021 09:29

Going to the beach, or taking a picnic lunch to the moor, spending all day there lying in the sun and exploring all the streams and patches of gorse, and any prehistoric stuff, like ruins of roundhouse, stone circles, burials that might be around.

Thingsthatgo · 24/07/2021 09:29

Crabbing. (Not 100% free because you need a crab line). It is one of my fondest memories of childhood.

Faranth · 24/07/2021 09:32

Ooh, crabbing! We used to do it with a safety pin tied to string/cotton. (after DB got the hook from a real line stuck in his leg)

rainbowstardrops · 24/07/2021 09:45

Love going crabbing and also lucky enough to live by the coast, so beach days were/are always lovely.
When my children were younger, we used to pack up a picnic and get on a train to London (kids went for £1 and with a friends and family railcard, it cost me about £20 all in, so not free but a fairly cheap day out) and we'd sit on the South bank and watch the street entertainers or hop on the tube and wander around Covent Garden, Borough Market, Camden lock etc. Used to love our London days out.

EssentialHummus · 24/07/2021 09:54

Just pottering around the garden snaffling ripe berries with DD, or letting her water everything. Or going to a park nearby that has fountains/water. Not totally free but the sheer joy of an ice cream, any ice cream, is another with young kids.

hellcatspangle · 24/07/2021 12:40

We used to have a pond locally with a rope swing over it that we used to splash about in.

I also remember going to a local pub with a beer garden that had a grassy bank - all the kids used to roll down it repeatedly (and get in trouble if we had white clothes on)

Caravan holidays with the grandparents were good fun too...out in the sun all day, back for a shower then out to "the embassy club" on the caravan site for the evening cabaret.
