Drinking the milk from the bowl after eating cereal = smart thing to do

Licking all the sauce off an empty plate after eating = totally vile and unacceptable!

You should absolutely not be tonguing anyone else's plate.
Your own - fine.

newnortherner111 · 24/07/2021 08:48

Just no.

I lick my plate at home if it’s something absolutely delicious. If I’m feeling more discreet I’ll use my finger and lick it Blush . I’m not going to stop and will continue nagging the kid’s to improve their table manners!

How can you lick your plate whilst telling the kids to improve their table manners. You kinda got to lead by example with kids. Confused

@MintyCedric

I was brought up to believe that plate licking is the height of bad manners.

The solution to this is to offer to clear up, so you can take your plate off to the kitchen and lick it to your hearts content with no witnesses.

Then stir mint sauce into the remaining gravy and drink it out of the jug...

Username checks out

😁

Oop! ^^ 😬 was meant to be 😁!

RainbowChameleon · 24/07/2021 14:37

Both of those things are fine when with immediate family or alone. Extended family /others, I wouldn't because they'd probably think I was being disgusting. I personally wouldnt judge negatively though as I know the temptation when something is that delicious.

Ach, obviously MN doesn't have the toothy grin emoji as it is on my keyboard!

I'll try the word in brackets instead...

Grin

That's better!

Laiste · 24/07/2021 15:07

When we dine out our table manners are exemplary. Children and adults.

When we are at home in front of only ourselves we eat like pigs and thoroughly enjoy it Grin

Bluntness100 · 24/07/2021 17:27

I actually don’t think it is fine to lick yout plate in front of your family. Or at any time. It’s just grim full stop.

Attheheart · 24/07/2021 17:34

I don't think I've ever seen anyone either lick a plate or drink milk directly from the bowl. Who are these people?

Passthecake30 · 24/07/2021 17:47

@Laiste fabulous, you are my kind of people!

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 24/07/2021 17:52

YABU.

Sometimes a plate needs to be licked.

unsync · 24/07/2021 18:18

YANBU. That's what the dog is for, no?

QueenBee52 · 24/07/2021 18:25

Ive never heard the term.. Tongue your plate 😂

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/07/2021 18:28

@icedcoffees our dog (RIP) would lick any plate with meat juices, gravy, cheese sauce, etc. She was especially fond of licking out any pan I’d made cheese sauce in, ditto any fish pie dish - double yum.

She would also perform a meticulous pre wash of any roasting tin before it went in the dishwasher - she’d keep at it for 10 minutes, holding it down with one paw until not a molecule remained.

FastFood · 24/07/2021 19:35

In France its totally normal to drink the milk from the bowl. We drink a lot of stuff from the bowl (coffee, hot chocolate...) and some bowls even have small handles for this purpose (the famous breton bowl with your name on it, all French kids have it, otherwise they could be stripped of their citizenship - I still have one).
We even drink cider in a small bowl.

And of course we dip the toast in the coffee before eating it. The first time my british bf saw me doing that he was horrified and I was horrified he was horrified so we were equally horrified.

I lick my plate when I'm on my own. Don't think the british bf is ready for that.

Aww, she sounds amazing! My beagle is similar - his favourite job is washing out any plastic tubs that need to be recycled Grin

I've a fab photo somewhere of my friend's miniature schnauzer Lily with her head in the dish washer performing a vigorous prewash.
