To cancel our short break as the weather forecast is shite

DH and I have booked 3 nights in Plymouth next week. Typically the weather forecast is crap and I’m now wondering whether to save £300 and stay at home and have a few days out instead.

Plymouth is a 3 hour drive, is there much to do if raining? We’ll probably end up sitting in a pub all afternoon and quite honestly if we wanted to do that we could in our local capital.

WWYD? Go or not to go.

DDiva · 23/07/2021 23:22

I would go.

We are holidaying in the UK next week and although I am keeping my fingers crossed for dry weather I cannot wait to go somewhere different. To wake up somewhere else with new places to discover is all I need right now.....

MinesAPintOfTea · 23/07/2021 23:22

Have you gone away in the last year? After lockdowns even just looking at a different 4 walls is good

QueenArnica · 23/07/2021 23:22

I would go… change of scenery, chance the forecast could be wrong. Get yourself room service, hotel beds are the best for movie nights! Enjoy!

kittenkipping · 23/07/2021 23:37

When you stay home and go for days out- you still do dishes. You still get the post in the morning. The mornings in your own house. I'd go. Rain or no, you're a couple and a weekend away is always a boon, no? Someone to cook for you morning noon and night? No dishes or mail? You'll put on make up whatever. He'll wear a shirt. You'll have more sex. You'll get either bad memories that you laugh over "remember the plaster falling?! That awful place that had 5 stars?! Oh god the rain?!" Or you'll have good memories that can't be described.

Yesitsbess · 23/07/2021 23:42

All of what @kittenkipping said and also you have to go because my DP has spent nearly £300 for us to go tenting this weekend with two insane children to somewhere I don't like much during a fucking thunderstorm and if I'm suffering then I'm afraid you must too.

Sorry, them's the rules. Grin

careerchangeperhaps · 23/07/2021 23:55

I'm in South Devon. Bring your wellies and waterproofs and enjoy the break. It's lovely here, even in the rain.

kittenkipping · 23/07/2021 23:55

Yesotsbes- I have very different advice for you! Tenting is hard. In rain, particularly. With kids?! If you aren't regular campers- don't go. There no sex pay off . There's more work. Don't do it

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/07/2021 23:57

Plymouth isn’t great in sunshine, tbh
(though being equally honest, I’m Cornish Grin).
Cancel and go to Cornwall instead.

Yesitsbess · 24/07/2021 00:16

@kittenkipping I am not a regular tenter for exactly those reasons. I have toured Europe in a van and that was hard enough without having to essentially nail down a sodding kite in the rain every fekkin time we stopped with two awful children whinging and needing things whilst I try not to murder everyone within a 50km radius.

I am determined to hate this weekend with every fibre of my being. In a cheerful #makingmemories way of course. Wine

FloofyCushion · 24/07/2021 00:30

See if you can book tickets to The Box. Its free but you need to book online. The aquarium is another good indoor attraction.

Mermaidwaves · 24/07/2021 01:15

I second the aquarium, I could spend hours there. I'm going away in the UK this week and it's my first holiday since Covid began and I'm just so excited to be somewhere new even if it rains the whole time.

Snugglybuggly · 24/07/2021 01:22

The forecast changes all the time, I heard it will be sunny in Devon next week

RebeccaBristol · 24/07/2021 06:11

The aquarium is amazing but you will need to book in advance

ZombeaArthur · 24/07/2021 06:17

We had a short break in May and it snowed! We still ended up having really nice time and, after such a stressful year, it was wonderful to be away from home.

If you haven’t been away for a while, I’d go.

arcof · 24/07/2021 06:32

Is £300 a lot for a holiday now? Just bloody go

Bawdrip · 24/07/2021 07:36

Tenting? Don't you mean camping? Is that we're people are calling it now?

newnortherner111 · 24/07/2021 07:44

Go, the weather forecast is always pessimistic, to reduce criticism after the 1987 'hurricane, what hurricane' episode.

See if you can visit the Eden Project as an indoor activity.

LynetteScavo · 24/07/2021 07:58

If you cancelled going somewhere every time rain was forecast on the UK, you'd never go anywhere.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/07/2021 08:42

Looking at the weather forecast, it might be OK, it's not wall to wall rain, showery at worst and a lot of places will remain dry - watch the 2 minute video, rather than looking at an app.

www.bbc.co.uk/weather

Bad weather or not, I'd be concerned that a lot of the indoor attractions like the Eden Project or aquarium will be booked up already - check before deciding. What were you planning to do in Plymouth and can you still do that if it's less than optimum conditions?

The weather is a big reason why I'm reluctant to holiday in the UK. Sods law seems to dictate that it's fantastic while you're at work, but any time you're on holiday and want to do things outside, it rains.

But then I'm not averse to having a holiday at home either. It's not having to work or stick to a timetable that's the attraction to me, freedom to go out for the day, sit and read a book, whatever.

I don't think of it as 'staring at the same four walls' and the only attraction of staying somewhere else is so that I'm nearer to different attractions that would make a day trip impractical.

And no, it's not because I have a big posh house, I live in a small 2 bed ex council semi, that most of Mumsnet would be very unimpressed with in terms of location, decor and cleanliness.

Yesterday I went for a drive across the North York moors and stopped to look at the view, look around the little villages, listen to the complete silence and then had lunch and I did think 'I could come here on holiday' but then also thought that I could go there for multiple day trips whenever I wanted and tick off the places I wanted to see more of over time - most of them are only an hour or so away from where I live and not run the risk of awful weather during a booked break.

ohthatbloodycat · 24/07/2021 08:46

I don't know the circumstances obviously, but I wouldn't cancel as it would be too late surely for the hosts to find someone else. Your refund means that they could be out of pocket. And the rain isn't their fault!

Saidtoomuch · 24/07/2021 08:47

Tenting? Don't you mean camping? Is that we're people are calling it now?
I hadn't heard it called that either, but I quite like it. Its efficient, rolls off the tongue better than camping in a tent.

hellcatspangle · 24/07/2021 08:52

I would go but probably wouldn't hang about in Plymouth for three days. Go to looe for a pastie and a pint. Maybe visit the gin distillery (if you like gin)

Just pack a raincoat and crack on!

BarbaraofSeville · 24/07/2021 08:53

@ohthatbloodycat

But it depends on the terms of the accommodation. If the OP is staying in a hotel, it's very common to be able to cancel up to about 24 hours in advance.

You do pay a slightly higher rate for that compared to a non refundable rate, but that means, over a number of bookings, the hotel doesn't lose money because instead of charging £100 a night for bookings by 5 people, they charge £125 per night and maybe 1 out of every 5 bookings cancel, so the revenue is the same, or possibly higher, because once a cancellation is made, they'll be able to sell some of those rooms on a last minute basis.

Pingued · 24/07/2021 08:54

I think the touristy stuff is outdoors mostly but there's an aquarium.

Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo · 24/07/2021 08:56

Same! But until last night the forecast said only one day rain rather than the whole week and following weekend it does now so I’m hoping it will change again 🤞🏻
