To lie about the need

Periods haven't settled down in nearly 3 years. Chat with GP and we decide the mirena coil might be worth a shot to try and help out. They tell me to do it via sexual health clinic.

After multiple attempts and hours on hold I get through to talk to someone who asks me if I need the coil for contraception. I say no. They say they can't do it then.

I mean, the contraception side would be useful but it's to try and regulate my cycle more and maybe even help mood swings etc that I'm now getting.

AIBU to ring back and say it is for contraception? They didn't take any details from me. Won't know me from Adam.

That sounds ridiculous. Why is your health less important than contraception?

SoddingWeddings · 23/07/2021 17:20

Absolutely no problem with this.

FabulouslyFab · 23/07/2021 17:21

Do what you have to do - I would!!!

WorraLiberty · 23/07/2021 17:23

Of course you should and in fact the person on the phone probably wishes you would!

They have boxes to tick so ring back and tick them.

DysmalRadius · 23/07/2021 17:24

Do it! I can't imagine men asking for free condoms are only given them if they state they want to have sex as opposed to a posh wank! This will improve your life and health - who is gatekeeping that?!

It’s to do with funding. Sexual health clinics are funded around contraception and STIs. Completely insane but they have to tick those boxes to get the funding for whatever tests/advice/products they provide.

My DD had the same issue, she ended up calling back and lying. GPs are either supposed to fit them or have somewhere they can refer you to for non contraceptive purposes.

Tig33 · 23/07/2021 18:35

I did not know this! I have mine for painful heavy periods and got it fitted at a sexual health clinic after being referred by my GP.
Has made a big difference to me and I would have been a bit put out if I was told I couldn’t get it as I wasn’t having sex. I thought it was now recommend for menopause as well? Would rather get it done in a sexual health place as they are more familiar with fitting than GP

Avant is right, it's to do with funding. Strictly speaking the Mirena, pill etc is chargeable (prescription cost) if not being used for contraception. In reality, no pharmacist would even ask the question.

Bakingwithmyboys · 24/07/2021 00:00

Thank you ladies. I think I just needed that push. Will definitely ring back and tell them it's for contraception. Which to be fair we shall probably benefit from that side of it.
