DH says I’m ridiculous for wanting to spend this amount of money on a watch, who is BU?

I’ve been lusting after a Rolex datejust for as long as I can remember, but have always stopped myself from buying because there has always been something more ‘sensible’ to do with the money, like keeping it in savings or spending money on an experience like a holiday. This year I’ve been feeling pretty low what with the current situation and there’s no way I’ll be able to go on holiday this year as I’m vulnerable health wise.

Announced to DH this morning that I’m thinking about treating myself to a nice pre owned Rolex (£6k) on the basis that it’s what I’d usually spend on holidays in a year anyway and they hold their value pretty well, in the event that I ever wanted/needed to sell.

DH thinks I’m being absolutely ridiculous spending such a large amount of money on a watch and now I’m wondering whether I’m having a moment of madness. I should point out that the funds would be coming from my own pot of money, rather than joint.

a car does seem to have more point than a watch though? What does a watch do? pretty sure its not to tell the time these days, its just to look flash?
Exactly. I need a car to get to work, cost £3k four years ago. I wouldn't spend double that on a watch if I won the lottery.

A car depreciates. A Rolex appreciates. It’s pointless keeping your money in the bank at current interest rates, investing in a good watch makes far more sense.

I’m not saying buying a car full stop, I’m talking about buying a more expensive model than another.

A new Mercedes will cost more than a Ford, and the difference is going to be more than £6k, and the majority of people do it because they want to look flash….. a Ford would do just fine.

Would buying a Ford and a Rolex be worse than buying a Mercedes?

But I expect you would spend more than £9k on a car? So what’s the difference, in moral terms?

Surf100 · 23/07/2021 22:25

buy it if you can afford it and want to. they don't lose money and I am getting myself one when I have the disposable savings to do so. lovely treat for yourself and you would always get your lonely back or more if you needed to

Surf100 · 23/07/2021 22:26

money*

SixesAndEights · 23/07/2021 22:27

All those going on about creating memories, what happens if you get dementia and you lose all those memories? At least the OP will have a pricey watch to sell to pay for her care.

scully29 · 23/07/2021 22:28

Well a more expensive car has more point than a watch. A £9k car is likely to be safer than a £3k car Id say? I wouldnt know for sure as I wouldnt have £9k for car but assume they have better safety features? So imo the difference, in moral terms, would be safety has a worth that flash doesnt.

Blossomtoes · 23/07/2021 22:29

Where does morality come into it?

@Blossomtoes PPs have said that spending that much on a watch is disgusting when people in the world can’t afford to eat.

cardibach · 23/07/2021 22:37

@JollyAndBright

Do it. Rolex’s are a great investment, they only go up on value.

DP has several. They have all appreciated in value since he bought them.
We literally have made over 16k since he bought them just by him enjoying having nice watches to wear and it’s increasing each year.

If this is true, that they on,y group in value, why would you buy second hand? The new one would be cheaper, yes?

@cardibach - some Rolex watches are so popular that manufacture doesnt keep up with demand. You can ask to go on a waiting list but you may well be on it for years with no guarantee of ever getting one (as the dealers will sell them to the clients who spend the most money with them rather than selling to someone they don’t know).

That means people who want to skip all that will pay more if they can get it straight away on the second hand market.

Oh right. So none of us should ever spend any money on things we want as long as there are global problems? Perhaps someone should send Jeff Bezos the memo.

19lottie82 · 23/07/2021 22:48

@Blossomtoes exactly my point. Why should we spend anymore than 20p on a handbag, when a Tesco bag for life will do the job just fine? Where do we draw the line?

Madness

Madness

In your opinion, and that’s totally fine.

MiaowMiaow99 · 23/07/2021 22:56

Get the watch. I waited for 42 years for mine. Always wanted one. Refused to wear any watch until I got the one I wanted.

stopgap · 23/07/2021 22:58

Can you afford it? That’s the only question you need to answer.

Nesbo · 23/07/2021 22:58

Just to illustrate an extreme example of my last post, if you look on Patek Phillipe’s website you’ll see a watch with the reference number 5711/1A 014. It tells the time and has a date wheel. It is made of steel and has a green dial. You can get it for the bargain price of £26,870.

Well, if they do happen to sell it to you at the price on the website you’ve pretty much won the lottery. Pop over to Chrono24 (which is a website for second hand watches) and you’ll see a few listed for sale (brand new, unworn).

The cheapest asking price is £264,528.

Also, for £9k I could get a newer secondhand car that will hopefully cost less in the long run for maintenance, and with lower emissions.
TheSkatesOfCoachBombay · 23/07/2021 23:05

I mean if it's your money, and you saved for it and can afford it. Then it's your choice how to spend it, and if it's a watch then so be it.

I don't think I'd ever buy a £6k watch only because, I can't even be trusted with a Apple watch I lost it in the gym changing room 😳 now I have a £10 Casio watch because I need a watch for my job as I'm always in appointments and things. 😂

HalzTangz · 23/07/2021 23:12

Why are you paying 6k used, just done a Google search and loads for under 4k new
